The owner's manual claims that the fwd legac L wagon can tow up to 2000 lbs with the stock suspension. A friend of mine bought a Subaru Legacy wagon (not Outback) several years ago with a factory towing suspension for towing his sailboat. It looked the same height, so I'm not sure what the differenc...

Other then that, most of the parts between the first gen legacies are interchangable, excluding the body panel/exterior changes between the 90-91 MY & the 92-94 MY's. Luckily, some body panels from 92-94 models do still fit on the 1990. I know that the front passenger door on my 90 wagon is fro...

Why would a starter make any difference in price? It's pretty negligible compared to other things that affect the price. If you want the car, and it's for sale, don't wait for the starter to go out. Go buy it and replace the starter. 120k miles is nothing by the way. :-)

So how well attached are those trim pieces? Is there something more secure just on the inside of the trim strips supporting them? I'm asking because I've wondered how fast I can go with a loaded bicycle/canoe roof rack (Thule). They don't seem to attach to very much, and if being old and gunky with ...

Have you checked for continuity in the wiring on that speaker. One way is to remove the headunit, and use an ohm-meter to measure resistance on the two terminals that run back to that speaker. You could measure the working one as a control pretty easily.

It's a tragic situation, and the people kids hang out with have more of an effect than most imagine. I've seen a lot of this in my family, and it makes me hesitant to have kids of my own. For my sister it took repeated stays in different jail systems. I could always tell when she was using by the su...

Thanks for the info guys; it's all been useful. I rotated the wheels, and that took care of the wheel fit problem. (They're steel 15" wheels from a friend's VW. My car didn't have two alike wheels when I bought it.) The rattling was better, but there was still something going on. I checked the ...

I'm not sure about the kits on ebay. I blew the passenger's side on mine and just got a head gasket from Napa for about 45$. In addition to that, I bought a new valve cover gasket set, even though I needed only one. I used the same gaskets everywhere else after checking them over and cleaning them. ...

Well, I checked all these things with the wheel on as it's easier to shake that way. I could still hear the rattling, but it wasn't the bushings, mounts, or any of those things. I wouldn't have guessed what it was. It was the rotor. I found it when I finally took the wheel off and shook what I could...

Call me Mr. Anal, but I'd get the surfaces as clean as possible. Mineral spirits and scotch-brite pads work great to loosen all the residue and gasket material. Then wipe it with a little bit of mineral spirits on an old, but clean, cloth. Then wipe with a dry, clean cloth. The discoloration didn't ...

rear wheel rattling

I've had a rattling noise coming from the rear passenger-side wheel for awhile. I could move the wheel and hub by hand with it on the ground, so I assumed the bearings were bad. I could hear that whirring/humming sound as well while driving. A nearby shop replaced the hub and wheel bearings with a n...

I don't know if you consider NW Ark too far away, but there are a few things here. Just about anyplace I've looked has had something. There is a salvage yard here in Fayetteville with a greenish 90-93 legacy wagon that's pretty complete, as well as a white 96 legacy Outback wagon, mostly complete. I...

Yep. The "balls" weren't all the way in the slots. The grease is still like new. It should be; the axle has only a few thousand miles on it.

did I damage my cv joint?

I tried to avoid it, but the driveshaft got pulled removing it. The internals at the transmission end seem to fit back in place, but the boot is still disfigured. Does this indicate something still out of place internally? It would be nice to avoid opening it if possible. photos: http://comp.uark.ed...

Like farfromwork, I ride an old bike. The headlamps on my 69 Scrambler dont' do much at all, and on high, the lamps burn more than the rated output of my generator - eventually running the battery to some low equilibrium point. I have stock exhaust, and I still feel like my bike is too loud. The onl...

ECU Code 33 related to transmission problems?

My transmission (a 4EAT) is not shifting past 3rd gear. What's worse, on hills it won't downshift when it should, even if I floor the pedal for a few seconds. I've tried to manually downshift to 2nd, or even 1st if slow enough, but it doesn't respond. The cruise control still works though. I checked...

On changing the oil. It can be done rather easily without spilling a drop of it. What I do is break the plug loose with a 17mm (six-point, but that doesn't matter) socket on a short breaker bar. Once it's loose, I turn it slowly with my fingers while the catch pan is underneath. When I think it's al...

What do you mean about the tightening? You should tighten it up in a certain manner. The details are in most manuals, but in a nutshell, here it is. tighten snug enough to hold the head in place. tighten a lot to form the gasket to the head and block. loosen the nuts to where they barely hold the he...
