Okay, so it failed. HCs at idle measured 164ppm, max being 120. CO was fine, 0.25% against max of 1.00%. O2 measured 0.7% and CO2 14%, not sure what they indicated since they don't determine pass or fail. Readings at 2500 rpm were about average. Any ideas for next steps for home diagnosis? I'm think...

Just went back to the last test, and the car did great in CO at both engine speeds and in HC at 2500RPM, but read 118ppm in HC at idle, with the max 120. So looks like that's the only reading that I need to worry about. I'm guessing new plugs and a hot cat should take care of that. I'll also do an o...

Suggestions for passing smog
Well our old lady Leggy, with 215,000 miles, has reached the end of her time with us, replaced with an STI. So it's time to either sell her or donate her. My decision is going to be influenced by whether she gets through a smog inspection or not. Last time she passed, but with one reading very close...

Well, If you keep brapping it out to 4000rpm right when you start it up, I'd be surprised if it lasted a week. Why the hell are you doing this? I'm not. The car was sluggish starting, which later turned out to be a battery that needed replacing. As I was trying to figure out what it was I gave it s...

Smoke - will the car go for 3 more months?
My 1990 N/A MT wagon (215,000 miles) has started to puff blue smoke. It only happens when I get it up over 4000rpm, and only for the first minute or so after sitting overnight. I'm thinking valve seals... Performance is not affected. Question is this: I just got a new job that pays much better and a...

Towing questions
Thinking of buying a dirtbike and small trailer. I have '90 Legacy wagon 4WD woith 210,000 miles on it. The questions I have are: 1. Will it be too much of a strain on the old girl to tow a trailer and a 250lb dirtbike? 2. Where can I buy hitch? Any particular brands I should look for? Anything in p...

Starters for 1990
Car-parts.com lists two different starters for a 1990 Legacy stick-shift, one for up to Feb '90, one for Mar '90 onwards. Part numbers are 23300AA200 for the older, 23300AA220 for the newer. Question is, I'm not sure exactly which one (or whether both) will fit mine, because I don't know its manufac...

Seems like a problem I've been having lately hasn't occurred to anyone else on this thread. Intermittently the fan stops working, and the LED indicators and vent controls also don't work. The heater control is unaffected (at highway speeds, the small amount of air that comes through naturally can st...

WTB Wagon trunk cover retainers
Such a stupid part to need, but I need the two little plastic retainers on the rear pillar that hold the retractable security cover in place when it is extended. I'm a musician and regularly have my music gear in there so need it covered up... I have a 1990 wagon. PM me if you have them. I need both...

Tire suggestion for CA winter
Hi there - did a search and couldn't find anything that really answered my question. I have a 91 LSi with WRX alloys, and it's time for new rubber. I know I'll be up at Tahoe in the snow at least twice this winter so wuld like something with reasonable grip in the snow, but don't think I want snow t...

Door latch not working
My passenger side door latch isn't working. The only way a passenger can get out is to push and hold the lock whilst pulling the door latch. I suspect it's an easy fix, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I open the sucker up.

Shift boot and steering wheel questions
Just bought a 90 LS Wagon and would like to make the interior a more pleasant environment. I'm buying an STi titanium shift knob but am wondering what can I do about replacing the shift boot. Will a WRX boot fit? Any other suggestions? Also, I'd like to get a better steering wheel. Are there any dro...

Well I'm new to the Legacy community. Just picked up a 90 LS Wagon 4wd 5-speed. I'd like to do the WRX linkage mod, but the info in the thread ended up with broken links to pictures. Does anyone have a step-by-step method with pics? I guess I'm most confused about the roll-pin thing, so pics of that...
