Re: Strange engine behavior.

spark plugs (one range colder and gapped to .43) miss/hesitate on full boost in the lower rpm range (3000-4500 rpm). Whenever the engine misses a/f will goes way lean and then way rich for a quick millisecond and the car will buck. After that, it runs smooth and strong. Boost gauge will read a litt...

Isn't there one filter in the fuel tank and one filter attached to the driver side strut tower? Austin - It sounds a lot like it could be due to the ECU learning badly due to a bad oxygen sensor... One way you could check that is to unplug the oxygen sensor and then reset the ECU by disconnecting t...

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that. I've also swapped out the fuel pressure regulator with one from a MY02 WRX, about 10K miles old. I've also replumbed the entire intake, replaced every rubber hose on the car, put on a new timing belt (the old belt had jumped a tooth at one cam...), Tstat, etc. etc. ...

What makes you curious about this part of our cars? I'm still having det/pinging issues. I have pretty extensive knowlege of the way the 02 WRX ecu functions, but not the 91 ej22t ecu. My det is difficult for me to solve. It doesn't happen all the time. Happens much more when hot outside, but still...

The pressure exchange solenoid switches the sensor's input between the vacuum line from the manifold and the atmosphere (through the filter). Thanks very much! When/at what times does the pressure exchange solenoid switch MAP sensor inputs? I would guess on initial startup, the ECU gets a reading f...

What solenoid is that?

On the passenger side front strut tower is a sound mounted (rubber insulated) panel. On this panel is mounted the oem boost control solenoid, the MAP sensor, and another solenoid with a vent/diffuser looking end on it. Connector has a yellow/red stripe wire and a green/yellow stripe wire. Vacuum lin...

Pull the vacuum line off your fuel pressure regulator. If your fuel pressure gauge is showing less than 43psi, then either your gauge is off or you need a new FPR.

Thanks for all the info! I wish the dang thing was obd2 so I could plug my laptop into it... vrg3 - I cleaned out the IAC valve body, and I also sprayed a bit of lube in it (lithium). After I was done cleaning it, it still operates freely. I'm not ruling out the IAC, but I don't think that's it... 7...

Causes for Intermittent High Idle?

My legacy will idle high about half the time. Normal Idle is ~750 rpm. Sometimes it'll idle as high as 3000 rpm, sometimes around 2500, sometimes around 2000, and sometimes down around 750. The car acts as if the throttle plate is sticking open. I've removed/cleaned the throttle body and inspected t...

I used stock WRX mounts. They're a huge improvement, if only because they're new, fresh rubber... and not torn in half

It really didn't feel like any type of hydraulic oil... but, then again, I've never played with 12+ yr old hydraulic oil...

Yech! Liquid filled motor mounts...

What liquid are liquid filled motor mounts filled with? I swapped out my engine and tranny mounts yesterday with a fresh set of GDA mounts. The tranny mount was sheared completely. One engine mount was sheared completely (which made removing it much more simple). I cut the other stock legacy engine ...

Your fuel pressure regulator sets a static fuel pressure of 43.5psi. 43.5psi is 3 bar. Static means referenced to atmosphere. The FPR is referenced to manifold pressure/vacuum. At idle, when there is 15-18-ish inches of vacuum in the intake manifold, fuel pressure is lowered by that much. The stock ...

But mine only reads vac as soon as the throttle has been opened, until then it's sitting at 0. Right now I'm running it off of that little hose that comes right off of the intake manifold, on the top side of the manifold... it'd be right in the middle of the plastic cover if you left that on your c...

Turbo trannies have a push type clutch - The clutch release fork is inserted into tabs intregral with the throwout bearing. To get the clutch release fork out of those tabs, you need to remove a 10mm allen head plug on the driver's side of the tranny. Then thread in a 6mm bolt into the clutch releas...

totech - thanks for the pdf!

What a guide to use as to whether or not I need to replace any/all of the belt idler pulleys? The two smooth idler pulleys have pretty raspy bearing noise, and won't spin for long... but the toothed idler pulley seems to be in awesome shape.
