This flat tappet, modern motor oil debate is all the rage over on the International Full Size Jeep Association site where we all have old school dinosaur AMC V-8s. I don't claim to understand all the facts, but as I understand, older motor oils used to contain alot more zinc. Zinc is apparently good...

The Phase I EJ25, on the other hand...
I know head gaskets are a common issue on EJ25s, are there other common problems with these motors I should be on the lookout for? Runs and drives great right now.

My buddy swears 4eat's die young...

Anybody have informed opinions about the strength/lifespan of a typical 4eat? Buddy of mine swears that he's heard they have a hard time making it past about 100k before it's rebuild time. I just bought a '99 Outback for my wife that has a 4eat and 97k on it, seems to perform great.

I've got autocheck, much like carfax.

3 owners
no title issues
no reported accidents
last reported mileage 81,486 10/25/05
looks like it lived in Reno, NV until 2005, then CA.
continually passed emissions inspections

Nice picture, thanks! I'm kind of thinking that in the end it really doesn't matter which part is making the noise, a used gear box is probably the way to go. I see these puppies all the time in my local u-wrench salvage yard with way less miles than the 175k I'm sporting. As far as fit is concerned...

Anybody have an exploded view of these transaxles they could share? My whine comes and goes with load. In other words if I'm cruising down the highway and let off the gas, whine goes away, get on the gas, whine comes back. In my experience that is more likely to indicate worn gears than a bad bearin...

So it sounds like a used tranny is more practical than replacing parts? Bummer. I was moments away from putting a new clutch in it too. Looks like that could be a waste of time. Is the 4.11 ratio pretty common for a manual?

So for a guy who has never been inside a trans of any kind but is super competent when it comes to mechanical work, what kind of job is it to replace the ring and pinion?

how much whine is normal from a 5mt?

The only 5mt Subaru I have ever driven is mine, so i don't have much of a frame of reference. Mine has a not obnoxious but noticeable whining noise, particularly in 4th and 5th (under load). Anybody got 2 cents?

How expensive is the gun required to push out the two parts? Looks mainly like a typical two part epoxy container though.
I think the guns start at like $35 and go up from there. Sometimes the supply store will let you borrow a gun from them if you buy the product there.

Figured it out. The ad was for a 96 outback but had pictures of a 97-99 GT that had been sold. Dealer error.

They're available to all. Local auto body supply and paint stores should have the stuff and sell to the public or you can get it online. The 2-part repair material requires a special gun to get it out of the tube, and the flexible body filler is like regular body filler in that you mix it with a har...

96 GT Wagon vs. 97-99?

Shopping for a car for my wife. Found a 96 GT wagon that has me confused, I was hoping someone could help clear this up for me. It's my understanding that the 96 GT looks different from the 97-99. Different bumper cover, foglights, 15 inch wheels instead of the later 16's, so on. So this 96 I found ...

To fill in the low parts of the rub strip and license plate recess I used a 2-part urethane repair material that is normally used just for repairing tears in bumber covers and other semi-flexible plastic parts but worked great for my purposes. Then on top of that I used a flexible body filler from S...

The rub strip is there in the before pics. As the bumper was torn right through that area and perhaps not even practical to repair, I thought I'd experiment with eliminating that feature. In my opinion it's the most dated part of the exterior and I like it better with it gone. I eliminated the reces...

Collision repair is my job, so that helps. Thanks for the compliments, I'm proud of her.

No extra cash right now but down the road I'll be looking to get a turbo hood and grille, so if anyone near southwest Michigan has either of them they'd like to sell at a later time, holler.

94 GT Wagon (been in the shadows long enough)

Hey everybody. I've been visiting this site since I bought my Legacy like a year ago and finally decided to show myself. Didn't know much about the 1st gen Legacy until I came across a wrecked but otherwise clean 94 GT Wagon on craigslist. Picked it up for $300 not really knowing how rare it was, an...
