4eat to 5mt swap in '98 LGT, high idle issue...

I just finished a trans swap for my buddy in his '98 LGT wagon and everything is working great except for the high idle that comes with leaving the TCU plugged in. I know this problem can be solved by removing the TCU but then the ABS needs attention. My question is can this problem be solved while ...

Re: 2.5 HGs

I asked that same question about head bolts a while back and the general consensus was to go ahead and re-use them. I hope that's sound advice because I've done three HG jobs and re-used the bolts.

Re: Trouble staying started when engine is cool

The one behind the alternator is the oil pressure sending unit. The temp sensor is on the crossover pipe, accessible from the passenger side and behind the intake manifold.

Re: WTF is wrong with my clutch!?!?

So I guess since you bled the system then that must mean that pushing the clutch pedal does have a least some affect on the hydraulic system, at least enough to push fluid out of the bleeder, correct? If so, the next thing I'd do is to have a friend/helper push the clutch pedal while you look under ...

Re: Best place to get timing belt & idler/tensioner

If pulling the motor and doing the clutch you should also do the rear main seal and re-seal the oil pan or install a gasket, whichever you prefer. Also make sure that when you get the valve cover gaskets that you also get the grommets that go on the bolts. Now is also a good time to do water pump/th...

Idle air control valve? That's just a wild ass guess, I'm sure someone who knows something will chime in, but if it were me I'd start by looking at the IAC,

Second Gen Legacy L with 5MT was 3.9 final drive. Should be tons of those out there.

Re: Fender bender

I put an aftermarket fender on my 94 and it fit very well. I do body work for a living and I'm very particular about fit and finish. I can't say that I trust aftermarket shit to fit the same every time but the one I bought fit great. Cost was around $80.

The GT only came in two colors so odds were pretty good of ending up with another blue one. Same color mine is as well.

Re: Taller 5th gear possible?

I would have guessed someone would have called me on my mistake by now. He has a 4.44 rear diff in the car now, not 3.9. Where did I get the idea that auto trans cars have a 3.9?

Is this an accurate observation, TY752=phase 1 and TY754=phase 2? Seems to be the case as far as I can tell.

Re: Taller 5th gear possible?

One thought I had is to get a trans out of a 95-99 L which has a 3.9 FD ratio. That way he can keep the 3.9 rear diff he already has and perhaps gain a few mpg on the highway. Anybody have any practical experience with this setup?

Recommend a leak down tester?

If anyone has any recommendations either for or against any particular brand/model of cylinder leak down tester I'd love to hear your opinions. I'd like to buy one, cost is definitely an issue but I don't want to cheap out and buy a turd.

I bought the car from the original owner and she said the only reason that she bought the Limited model was because it was the only 5MT on the lot. It's a real shame that you couldn't get the dual sunroofs and the manual transmission together.

Here's the car by the way. Not too shabby for $600. Runs good, body's nice, interior is a little dirty but still in excellent condition.

Yeah, seems like disassembling the main shaft is inevitable if I'm going to make this thing right. This car is an investment project that I am going to sell when finished so I don't want to go farther than I really need to but I do want to do it right, I'm not the type to just put a quick fix on som...

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. I do have a '99 FSM that I downloaded a while back, I never would have been brave enough to open the case up without the manual to go by. I haven't had a chance to monkey with the project any since my last post, but fishbone79 asked if I had any more pics...
