Re: How to Repair a Leaking Steering rack: Subaru Legacy, '9
Hey I did check but was unable to find a definitive answer. Actually I could not even find the listed part no in this thread (34128AA211). What i found under LHD was seal kits and repair kits 34128AA000 and 34128AA170 respectively and under RHD 341260GA500 in column section SW with a one under /L R...

Re: How to Repair a Leaking Steering rack: Subaru Legacy, '9
Hi guys, Been awhile since I've been here. Good to see people are actually trying out the simple and reliable, home brew steering rack rebuild. It really is the best way to go if the rack is in fair to good condition. Not to mention, it gives people a sense of independence, an opportunity to take ca...

Re: How to clean carbon buildup from heads/pistons @ home?
the machine shop is going to charge you for cleaning/hot tank. let them deal with it. don't use oven cleaner on anything but external aluminum. it does an excellent job of cleaning intakes, valve covers, etc. don't use any power abrasives on aluminum. it will change the shape rapidly unless you have...

Re: crank but no start
bob dole knows that the crank pulley on a subaru can really confuse bob dole. bob dole installed his friends timing belt three times before bob dole got it right. bob dole learned that subaru was messing with bob dole by adding an arrow to the front of the crankshaft sprocket.... actually, th...

that came out looking really nice, streetable and affordable. i like the fact that you stuck with the factory rim and selected a taller tire. looks really good.

You'll want an NSK 6202 VV C3 BRG The VV code says that it's sealed on both sides. The C3 is the tolerances inside. The standard bearing is like C2 which is slightly tighter tolerances. The guy at the counter said C3 is pretty much what you find in most everything, and that's what I got. You'd prob...

Re: Power steering pump bearing?
you won't get an actual bearing p/n from the manual, only subaru's p/n for that bearing. bearings are pretty much standardized. so, if you disassemble your pump, the bearing race or seal will have the standard bearing number. take this number to your local bearing house and match it up. my last proj...

great pics! we appreciate the actual measurements when comparing the legacy, forester and outback struts. this detail and commentary is extremely helpful for others that would try the same mod. and, in my opinion, it looks like a useful mod for preventing high-centering in the north and allowing som...

cutting boards are an awesome source for low buck uhmw polyethylene. you can get black cutting boards from target. i used one to make saddle bag reinforcements for my cycle. worked great and doesn't rust.

Re: Ball joint question.
the top and bottom pull-push thing is not 100%. the reason is that the balljoint will be preloaded by the lower control arm bushings while the strut assembly is at full extension. since you are replacing an axle, you have two choices for installation: 1. remove the control arm at the bushings or 2. ...

Re: Car wandering?
too much toe-in or toe-out will make a car dart on surface irregularities. is your car raised or lowered? excessive camber places load on tire edges and irregularities will distribute load causing a pull in the steering. to verify, is your tread wearing heavy on inside or outside edges? certain trea...

Re: Outback lift question
i agree with most of what you say except that reman half-shafts use crappy boots. i've replaced 3 right hand axles (autozone, lifetime warranty) and one left hand in two years on the same '94 legacy because the boot cracks, throws all the grease and then starts clicking. all this in just 57K miles (...

Re: How to Repair a Leaking Steering rack: Subaru Legacy, '9
Hey Shag,
Sounds like your rack is a good candidate for this repair. If it is anything like mine, you'll have to take only .001" off the rod diameter to restore the finish. This will be way better than what you would have in a low-buck remanufactured unit.

'93Leg, congrats on your purchase. These old subie's are quality built, have diverse performance and are super easy to work on/modify. The Turbo 5-speed is popular with enthusiasts in the know! For the money, there's not much that will beat it in daily driving conditions.

Re: How to Repair a Leaking Steering rack: Subaru Legacy, '9
Appreciate it! It did take a bit of time to put this together, but it is a useful addition to the forum. It's rare to find an early Subaru without rack leaks and there is very little info on the net regarding proper repair of any make of rack. Just so you know, I used two 1990 racks for this write-u...

yes, at 277k it probably does need some new gaskets, in lots of places.... bubbles are the first thing i look for. cheap diagnosis that is nearly fail-proof. sounds like the block is full of rust and corrosion. you might want to pull the plugs out of the lower part of the engine block and clean out ...

How to Repair a Leaking Steering rack: Subaru Legacy, '90-94
If your power steering reservoir runs low, then you have a leak. For older cars with rack and pinion steering, this is normally caused by a damaged passenger side (RH) rack seal. When the steering rack boot cracks, road dirt and sand can be carried into the rack seal as the rack slides back and fort...
