I've put enough miles on "vintage" Subarus to know lifter noise when I hear it. This is way beyond lifter noise.

Similar thing happened to me just a couple months ago. Luckily I escaped with a headlight swap and a couple scratches to the bumper skin.

Sucks. I'd probably fix it if I were you.
