Look in the driver's foot well area up at the heater box. There will be white levers on the side of the box. See if they're trying to move when you hear the clicking.

I get the same noise when I put my defrost on, yet the def/heat doesn't make the noise.

This symptom very rarely occurs , but the next time it does I will take a look.

Definitely sounds like motorized dampers trying to pull it past a resistance and skipping gears.

Pull the center vents off and stick a small flash light and a small webcam or an inspection camera down it. You'll be able to see some parts of dampers moving.

Maybe something lodged in there or heater core was previously serviced and reassembled incorrect.

Mine does this as well, but only when I turn it off. If you turn the heater off and push one of the other defrosts halfway(but make sure it doesn't turn on), the noise should go away…

This!!!!

That happens to mine as well.
Kind of annoying, but since nothing has stopped working I just accept it as a quirk of my old car....
