Adding Variable Intermittent Wiper Stalk

Post by Legacy777 »

I finally got around to putting in the variable intermittent wiper stalk in my Impreza. I'm not sure if it's as difficult in the Legacy, but the steering wheel has to come off, clock spring, and the stalk controls to get at the wiring.

Interestingly, the wiring for the intermittent rear wiper is not in the Impreza. I need to look at the wiring diagrams to see how it's wired. I think I can probably just tie the two wires together if the rear intermittent mechanism is in the stalk.

Anyway....here are pictures.

Ok....the plot thickens. I have looked at every Subaru factory manual and wiring diagram I have and I cannot find one that has the wiring diagram for the rear intermittent wiper stalk. I need to know whether the intermittent function is handled internal to the stalk like the front one is or if there's an external relay/control.

If you have any information that'd help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Dominator didn't say any thing about it in his write up.

Sorry you had some snags with your install Josh. I would have assumed the rear intermittent controls were in the stalk as well. I find it odd that it would be controlled somewhere else. I have not had a car with a rear wiper, and thus have not performed this "upgrade" to one that does. Please keep us posted.

Maybe some of the info on this write up will help. It's got some pictures and simple wiring diagram of the rear wiper relay.

On a similar note, I wish I had access to coupe and sedan rear glass for the impreza and legacy with provisions for a rear wiper. I would LOVE to add that functionality to my cars.

In looking at your write-up I think the steering wheel in the Impreza is a little bigger which necessitated me removing it. Oh well....no biggy now....it's done.

In talking with Mike, he said this stalk came from a 91 LS. I looked at the parts catalog and there was a different wiper stalk for the 91 wagons than the 90 & 92-93 wagons.

So I need to find someone that has the wiring diagrams from the 91 section 6 factory manual. It may have the info I need.

Unfortunately, no that is the same diagram I have. There is no intermittent setting shown for the rear wiper stalk and that's what I'm trying to find some more info about.

Thanks!
