HELP! Turbo grill onto 93' Legacy L wagon

Post by JordanD »

Hey guys. I'm new to the whole Subaru world and just picked up a 93 legacy wagon for a hell of a deal (I think so at least). I wanted to play with it a bit and decided to buy the turbo legacy grill for it. But upon installation I notice the turbo grill doesn't quite line up the same as the stock grill. The "tabs" on both sides of each opening for the top clips stop the grill from fully engaging in the clips and having a secure fit. And the three bottom clips are different as well and dont exactly secure into place.

What exactly do I need to do to fit the grill in perfectly? I use the clips from the original grill over on the turbo one. Do I need to get new clips? Shave off the tabs on the turbo grill?

Its been awhile since I looked. But they should line up close enough to zip tie in there. Zip ties are the way to go.

I thought about using zip ties but I want to know if there's a "right way" of doing it first.

is the turbo grill a preface-91 or is it postface-92-94? Swapping clips is easy. Give that a shot they might be broke

All I know is that it's from the same year wagon as mine which is a 93. Difference would be mine is just an L.

And I'm extremely new to the Subaru world so I don't even know what post face lift and pre face lift even means...

it should fit just fine I swapped my entire front end on my 92 to a 91 everything fit
you should check the alignment of the holes the tabs clip into or perhaps you need some new clips.
I can post pics of both styles of grills from the back if need be

HI and Welcome.

I would also 'think' the grills of same year would interchange.

The '90-'91 were considered PRE-facelift and '92-'94 were POST. Mild front and rear body changes, w/a few mechanical differences. The '91 Legacy Sport Sedan Turbo (1st year of the US Legacy turbo) was a Pre-facelift.

You can search on here/Google for examples.

Welcome to the BBS!

As others have mentioned, grilles from the same year (non-turbo or turbo) should be interchangable. Can you take some pictures and post for us to take a look at?

I agree with josh and Mr dash. I have a feeling they should both fit if they're from the same body style. I've had turbo grills on my L models in the past.
+1 on the idea for pictures.

This is not entirely true. I too have put a 91 front end on my 92 project.

You have 2 options to accomplish this.
Option a: oval some of the head light mounting holes and pound on the head light bucket to fit the 91 head lights on the 92-94 chassis.

Or

Option b: (which is what I did) Replace the 92 core support with the 91 core support. Pics are in my build journal.

Just for clarity though, since the original poster is going from 93 to 93, there should be no modifications necessary.

No worries. I just wanted to make sure the original poster and anyone searching in the future wasn't confused.
