4eat to 5mt

Post by billcthesubenut »

Hello everyone. This is BillC.Just took the sport sedan for the first
drive in months. This time with a 5mt transmission. It was worth all
of the headaches. The car feels faster stock with a 5 speed than it
did with all my old mods and 4eat.I have been driving a svx for
several months so the acceleration felt very brisk. This would not
have been such a project if it wasnt for all of the rusty bolts I had
to break.Almost everything that could go wrong on this project
did,but the first full throttle shift made it all worthwhile.Next
step, the tdo4 and water/air intercooler sitting on my bench.BillC

Dan, Tranny has 150k on it but no slippage. It has the usual slow 2 to 3
shift but otherwise works well.It doesnt shift any worse than my 1996 svx w
70K.When I had the dropping resistor unplugged,it slammed into all gears. The
transmission had a cooler installed the day after it was taken home from the
dealership in 1993.I live in St Paul MN 55110. If you are interested or want
more info contact me.I also have a dissassembled sport sedan 4eat for
parts.BillC

Bill,

The SVX is a pretty quick car! It's faster than a stock Legacy SS even with a
5 speed. But it sounds like you feel your Legacy is quicker. Is your Legacy
really quicker or does it just feel quicker? What mods did you do to your car
besides the tranny?

The SVX is not fast from a standstill. Above about 40-50 mph.....then the SVX will shine. However there are some pretty fast turbo legacies out there, some which I'm sure will give the SVX a run for its money.

Josh,

I know there are some quick Legacy's out there even though nobody seems to have
any 0-60 times to speak of. But the SVX did 0-60 in 7.3 sec while our Legacy
Turbos did 0-60 in 8.1 sec with the 5 speed. So even from a standstill up to
60 mph the SVX was quicker while bone stock. Seeing as the SVX is a non turbo
Flat 6 and an automatic acceleration is smoother has less surges making it feel
that the car is slower. Bill might be surprised if he had both cars go head to
head. A friend of mine had a stock '98 Impreza RS and he beat me twice in a
race. I have driven his car b4 and I still say my car feels faster. But he
would get me off the line everytime and then I would just barely gain on him
the rest of the way. I don't know maybe I just had launches! Has anyone else
raced an RS? My friend even beat the new Nissan Sentra Spec V (I think that's
what it's called) which is definitely supposed to be faster than his car.

You sure he's stock?

I've got some friends.....he's got a 99 RS...pretty much same as the 98, and his wife has a Spec V and the spec V is faster in a straight line.

Yeah I'm positive he was stock!
After he beat the Spec V he started to wonder if there was something special
about his car! I believe the '99 RS' have the SOHC engine which is supposed to
be more powerful than his DOHC engine. He knows he's not supposed to win that
race. Needless to say his friend was pretty embarrassed. I felt better after
I heard that one!

Hi Frederick, This is BillC. I should clear up some things first. I said the
car was stock in my post.It is not. My bad. Without that big intercooler and
all the intake junk it seems stock to me. You can see the car before I
traded off all the intercooler stuff for a jdm water air system at
http://www.xmission.com/~dac/centric/members/bill covert.htm All of the
other mods besides the intercooler and associated plumbing are still there.I
also replaced the knock sensor. My boost guage is not hooked up yet, I had
run the hose through the hole for the clutch master cyl. I am moving this
weekend so I just did enough to make it drivable to the new house. There in
its new home it will get the complete workover.I would not describe the svx
as quick, however it is very fast. The first day I had it I did a top speed
run and it wanted to go faster than I did. It doesnt really get going until
about 3000 rpm and then a big surge of power.Highway passing power is
tremendous! I never timed the svx for 0 to 60 but after driving this car for
a year I would say it makes its time up after 40mph where it really starts
to pull. Also,I dont even remember what a stock sport sedan feels like. Dont
get me wrong,I love the svx, it is a big fast heavy comfortable car. I just
like my Leagcy better for spirited driving. Hope that clears up things.

You americans got ripped off in the early 90's. A standard RS will do the 0-60mph in 6.8sec and the quarter in 14.9. Now you guys get the 2.5lt turbo STi and were stuck with the 2.0lt.
