td04 help

Post by ugaucin »

So I did the td 04 swap on my wagon. Now that I'm done I'm getting a couple problems. First one is no boost at all. Second is smoke from turbo. There's a loud sucking sound from my intake.

Hi,
This should be in the TURBO category...probably a Mod will move.

There's a good chance you've got a boost leak causing both issues....seems to be common.

I'm NOT giving you grief! Just been down that path myself and had to redo some hoses....a few times...to get it right.

How did you connect the 90° hose that was on the VF11>>intake.

How 'bout some pics of your setup?

Did you use a TMIC, too?

Turbo's miles? But things may smoke for a few minutes/miles after first startup, too.

Double check all the simple things first. Hoses, wires, EBC in the pass side strut tower. Make sure all your banjo bolts are tight. There is only the one hard line and then the return rubber line underneath the turbo. Smoke could also be from the up/down pipe gaskets. Did you replace those?
Double check the only too, to make sure you are not losing oil and trying to drive without it.

-If that big BLUE hose from your 'coffe-cup' to the turbo is one piece, that's part of your problem. That's too much unsupported silicone - it's collapsing under boost....and should have a clamp on it.
-What is the small RED hose for?
- How is the BPV plumbed?

Since that's before the turbo, I would think that it isn't pressurized. But I would still clamp it, being that it's after the MAF.

the red line is a boost controller one and the bpv is just venting out like a bov. Today I redid everything and it give a 23 and 49 cel. Any idea why?

Mike,
No offense, but I wasted days/weeks chasing THIS when my intake hose - very similar to this setup - collapsed.

In this pic you can kinda see the hose from my 'coffee-cup' which winds down into the turbo. Whenever it got above 40° would go soft and collapse.

Image

I went back to using the stock 90 turbo inlet hose:
MAF>>Reducer hose>>coffee-cup>>stock hose>>2" exhaust pipe>>90° silicone hose>>TD04. The exhaust pipe piece was pushed into the 90 where it started to bend and I had no further issues.:

No offense, but running it as a BOV is a bad idea. The way the MAF system works on these cars it needs to be recirculated (yeah, another PITA to plumb in).

CODES 23 and 49 are both MAF-related, so you'll want to check your wiring.

Todd, no offense taken. I can't find it now, but I read someone on here put a 90* piece of exhaust pipe inside the silicone elbow in question, and obviously had no collapsing issue. It was a post in the last month or so.

I ran the stock BPV as a blow off valve for awhile with no issues. But I do agree that recirculation is the best way to run our cars, just put my car back to recirc and it's so much better.

Robert,
Please explain how it's better if it ran w/no issues as BOV? I'm not getting the difference. (and not being an A$$ - just thought the BOV did not work)

Thanks,

TD,

I plugged the intake and left the outlet of the stock BPV open, letting it vent to atmosphere. It just ran rich, as did my HKS and TurboXS blow off valve did. I was using the BPV as an atmospheric BOV and I didn't have a problem with driveability, BUT recirc just made my car respond better and such through shifts and idle, etc.

Hope that's a bit more clear

td04 help

Post by robertpaige »

That would cause issues because that's just leaking all your boost pressure right out. Make sure you have the flange gasket/RTV. One time I left one bolt a tad loose and my car ran like a pile of dog crap until I finally checked the flange. It didn't look loose.

bpv is leaking, tired a other one same thing. Turbo keeps smoking. I ran it for like 5 mins and with 5 psi, smoked really bad when i turned it off. I'm just stuck. I really need help with this. The turbo is smoking for the up pipe. Why isnt the bpv closing? Is the vacuum line messed up?

How do you know it's leaking? And how bad is the smoke. It will smoke a bit after an install like that cause coolant/oil will be burning off of it, that's pretty normal. Make sure your oil line on the head is tight and the copper washer is on there as well.

When U installed the TD04's oil line (re-used the VF11, correct?). There are 2/TWO of those copper washers - one on top and one on bottom of the banjo fitting. There are also 2 for the lower fitting -in case you removed that to help the install.

Plus, the return line underneath the turbo can be a PITA to get on. It must be on straight - not bent @ all - w/both upper and lower clips in the proper location.

U didn't answer my earlier question about MILES on the TD04, but if it's over 100- 125K, it could be bad...but really depends on how hard a life it lived previously.

Check the ARROW on the BPV...make sure it's pointed in the correct direction (I'd have to look @ mine).

I believe the td04 has around 70-80k on it. Didnt look bad at all. Yeah i reused the oil lines. The washer are there. I didn't forget about them.. The arrows are pointing out from the intercooler.

It smokes pretty bad Robert. It only begins to smoke when I turn off the car.

I know the bpv is leaking cause at idle its letting out air.

Re: td04 help

Post by robertpaige »

Okay well then both your BPV's are bad, it should not be leaking air at idle. Take the BPV off, and put something in the hose to block it off. Anything that fits and you can clamp around. It will cause "compressor surge" because the air isn't going anywhere (but back at the turbo) but we're ruling out an issue here and it's not gonna hurt anything temporarily. Try and get a new BPV setup. Get a WRX valve and a Wynton M adapter plate off eBay.

So you see any visible oil? If it's smoking bad then something is dripping and hitting exhaust. Can you see where the oil is at all? Also check your valve cover as well. Make sure those bolts are tight.

Well someone told me it can be pvc system. That the vacuum line is keeping the bpv open, I do here a leak by the purge valve. I tried it today but it was the same thing.

Theres no viable leaks. Im going to go get new washers at Subaru.

Someone told you what about the PCV system? That has nothing to do with the BPV. Like I said, put something in there to block it off completely.

As far as the washers go. If there are no visible leaks, it looks like you may have picked up a bad turbo. The internals seals have probably failed.

I ran with the bpv capped and it ran really good.

If the seals are done, wouldn't there be smoke out of the exhaust?
