has anyone tried to turbo a ej18 spfi? or is it just simply impossible because of the air flow meter?

I don't know if it's impossible, but I'm sure it will have challenges. I don't know of anyone turbocharging the EJ18 SPFI because we didn't get that motor on the first gen Legacies. I know Impreza got the EJ18, but don't know if it was SPFI or MPFI.

Hopefully someone else can chime in as well.

Find a local tuner and see what he recommends.

In the US, all EJ engines were MPFI.
I know some foreign markets got carbureted EJs, but wasn't aware of an SPFI one anywhere. I'm wondering if there's some incorrect terminology going on here.

Aha, makes sense to me. Haven't seen an SPFI one, only carbed. Does yours have a distributor or is it distributorless ignition?
