Plasti Dip!

Post by CAV3MAN227 »

-I've just started to learn about this Plasti Dip stuff by watching DipYourCar, http://www.youtube.com/user/DipYourCarcom/ . Seems like a great alternative to getting your car painted, as long as you have a good base to start from. I've been thinking about trying it on my RS rims first to see what the outcome would be on them. I've painted rims gloss, satin, flat black, in the past so this would give some comparison.
-My question is, has anyone here, used this Plasti Dip on there legacy's or any of their vehicles and did you like the final results? If you have any pictures or videos, I would like to see them and hear your feed back on Plasti Dip. Thanks.

Plasti Dip!

Post by matt00rs25 »

Ill be doing my legacy as soon as I fix some New England rust. Im thibking matte black and gold wheels myself. I've got a guy in my local club that does it. His sti is currently a Tiffany blue and will some type of orange next month. Love the fact it can be changed so easily.

Check out that wheel log i put up, Joe. I just finished the front two wheels tonight. So far they look pretty decent (personally). I'm not sure how well they match the color of my car, but the plastidip is pretty easy to use and coats nice and evenly. I mentioned it in another thread, but at least the can of metallizer i have kind of splattered a bit, which was frustrating.

Now that i posted it in ten bajillion other threads, i might as well post it here as well.

When I did my blaze orange/ gild metalizer wheel setup I noticed that I had to have the cans really warm for the metalizer to spray nicely. I let them sit in a bucket of hot water for a while before spraying each coat

I think my issue with the metallizer was just how i was holding it. In any case, for the back wheels i moved my finger back on the top of the nozzle and wiped off the nozzle every now and then. That seemed to help.

-Thanks for everyone's input. The stuff looks great. I was originally thinking matt black on the RS wheels but I think gold will go better with the white car.
-I was also wondering, in all the videos I was watching, they're applying the plasti dip to new new cars. wonder how it will hold up on our old SS cars? My body if far from perfect. Typical rust, dings, scratches, dents, etc. Wonder if I did decide to do the car this summer, if it would stick to the rust spots? I don't have the dollars to get body work done at this time.

Por15 look for it at NAPA. it will paint over your rust and stop it from rusting further

Remember you can use white plastidip for the base to make the gold brighter. Honestly if you're worried about it staying on, go find a piece of scrap metal that's rusted and paint over the top of it. Though it might not give you an idea of the longevity, it should give you an idea of how it sticks to things. I've painted over that fakey chrome stuff on the grille on post face lift NA models and had it stay on for years. That's not exactly an surface that's easy to stick to.

I'm about to do my entire car with a kit... DIY with me and the pops :) any tips on prep, did you remove anything or just tape EVERYTHING off well?

Also if anyone has experience or results with the satin finish I would love to see pics! I've only seen matte black and matte red on here which look great but I wanna keep my shiny black color :) we will be doing this in a booth on base and I will take many pics for documentation

i recomend the temprature of the surface you painting be correct. when i did mine the pannles were a bit cold and didnt let the plasti dip lay out smooth.

Sounds good, should be a warm spring/summer day when we get to it and nice/toasty in the booth. Been watching YouTube vids to help give me an idea as well. Still not sure how nice a satin black will look and the ease of cleaning/how clean it gets :/ I usually go to a spray off or handwash at home so hopefully that'll be ok
