Radiator Size for Stock Suby AWIC

Post by ghia nut »

Long story short, this is not going into a legacy or subaru for that fact.
So this tosses out the idea of using the stock subaru radiator for the AWIC.

Im wondering what size radiator I need to run the Subaru AWIC.
I am limited on space. My current radiator core size for my ej22t is 12.5x2.5x18
so I would need something in and around that 12.5x18x like .5 to 1.
I was considering using a condensor from something?

You should be able to get by with something much smaller than the radiator.

You may want to check out these two posts as well.

You'll find the information you want on the AWIC here:

Do not use an AC condensor, it won't work. The holes are too small inside the condensor and the back pressure would be extremely high.

thanks for the threads, Ive read them over and most likely will again.

Was considering this. Will need to modify it for the inlet and outlet position, maybe with some 3/4 or 5/16 connections.

That'll probably work alright. It's pretty close to the stock AWIC core dimensions. If you're pushing big power, it might be a little small.

5/16" is going to be too small, you should do 5/8 or 3/4. Not sure if you meant to say 5/8 instead of 5/16.

Really need to know what your application is to figure out how big.
What turbo? What engine? what chassis?

I second Josh's comment on the one you pickedmight be a bit small for anything beyond 200 hp. I am running the 24x12x2 and it is a bit big, but it never gets warm. Something 18x12x1(or 1.5) would probably be about right.

I think you could use a larger size radiator. The one you have will likely work, and maybe get a little warm at times. I think the AWIC system would work better with a larger radiator. The issue with an AWIC system getting warm or hot is that since water has a higher heat capacity, it will take longer to cool off. It is ideal to try and not let an AWIC setup "heat soaked". Typically stop and go traffic can have this affect. So the larger the radiator (device doing the cooling) you can give the faster things should cool down.

That radiator listed is the largest that will fit within my given space that has been tested by multiple people... but on a ej22 as this is a rear engine application, so sadly I cant go outside of that specific radiator without having to have one custom made which sounds to me like $$$.
The one key advantage here is that there is considerable distance between the engine and the radiator. Due to the systems being at opposite ends, factor in that idea with potentially using metal (would love to do alluminum but thats pricey but could use steel or stainless steel if the tube is VERY insulated read galvonic corosion here) coolant lines for the radiator (might just use flexible radiator hose as cheaper more flexible alternative to metal but not as effective radiating heat).

Ive never seen an AWIC radiator setup up close, I mean I know its a radiator infront of a radiator. Legacy777, cant tell if yours has space between the radiator and the AWIC radiator, guess thats how it has to go so that the space behind allows for cooler air? How much clearance? Like an inch or so?

If that's all the space you have to work with, then yeah, start with that. Unless you put fins on the metal piping going from the intercooler to the radiator, they won't lose too much heat. Adding a resevoir somewhere in the system would be helpful and add additional capacity. Depending on what part of the country you live, you may be able to run a reduced antifreeze & distilled water ratio. Also I suggest running Redline water wetter to help improve cooling, by reducing the water's surface tension. I run about a 35% antifreeze mix with RL water wetter. The 35% antifreeze is about the minimum you need to prevent algea and other nastiness from growing.

Regarding the space behind the radiator, yes there is a space behind the AWIC radiator before it gets to the engine radiator. It's acutally probably about 2-3 inches. If you have an inch or so of clearance, that should be fine.

This isn't the greatest picture, but if you turn your head you can see how much clearance I have.

The front "radiator" is my AWIC radiator

Can't see it, but I have about an inch between the two.

Lost the AC, but was able to fit the biggest AWIC radiator I had. Part of the reason it is always so cool.
