Post by Peanutibutter »

My 90 legacy heats up way to fast and I don't know if the thermtat is in backwards or not. The guy I got it from said he replaced it. And the sensor dosnt work and there is anti-freeze in the radiator. I don't know whats going on!!

It is very important to use only the subaru OEM thermostat, as aftermarket ones have documented serious cooling problems on our cars. If your temp gauge on the dash is not working, that probably means the temp sensor(s) on the aluminum pipe under the intake manifold is bad. The temp sensor for the gauge cluster has a single blade connector, while the one for the ecu is next to it and has a 2-wire plug connector.

I highly recommend finding out if the previous owner used a factory Subaru thermostat, and if not, replacing it with one immediately. 2ndly, the gauge temp sensor should be replaced as well. Note that the factory thermostat only fits in one way.

This is what the stock Subaru t-stat looks like. It is deeper on the back end compared to most aftermarket ones.
