No more 2.2L (updated: Now image intensive)

Post by JasonGrahn »

So i'm driving home from work last night hearing a bit of rattle rattle rattle. Sounds like an exhaust rattle or something... maybe a rock from t-bird got stuck in the heatshield and is just now coming loose. driving some more... rattle gets louder, deeper in tone.. driving some more, getting some squeeks. My head it floating, going "WTF is going on... something bad is happening, my engine is fucked. Lets just get it home.. com'on buddy, you can do it!!"

No dice.

Theory is rod and/or main bearing are kaput from lack of oil-delivery/lack of oil. Just changed my oil a couple weeks ago with no troubles. So i start cold-calling friends.

Is it weird to know at least 4 people with "spare" engines sitting around? The '90 is going to be getting a 2.5rs DOHC transplant from a '99 Legacy over this week. Hopefully to be taking pictures as the progress goes.

A moment of silence for a fallen hero.. Here's to a dear old friend who supplied me with nearly 5 years and 110 thousand miles of fun, and not all of nice on the parts either. It leaves this world with nearly 250,000 total miles on the internals.

I hate to say this, but writing this nearly brings a tear to my eye.

Rest in piece my friend... Rest in piece(s).

edit to add total milage of my poor, poor, engine.

That sucks, badly...but it is handy that you've got a network of people who can provide parts and get the car back on the road.

Here's to one of the few EJ25-powered BCs in the world.

 I wish there were a 'saluting' emoticon. At least the rest of the car's alive and will have more torque now. Now I worry about mine at 237000. Need to get that turbo ready...

Sorry to hear about that. :(

Are you going to break it down and see exactly what the problem was?

I don't mean any disrespect to the EJ22's memory, but how which phase EJ25 is it? And how do you plan to deal with engine management?

Thats part of the plan, I would like to find a VW guy who doesn't mind the challenge of a rebuild for his Vanagon or something.

It's a Phase 2 DOHC (i believe) from a '99. As the sensors are basically all the same, I plan on using the 2.2L ECU. resources say it will work, but i'll have the wiring harness and ECU from the engine to work with as well (just in case). I don't know if anyone has ever done this swap before, so we're treading into uncharted territory.

Phase 1 DOHC. All the phase 2s were SOHC.

Make sure before you drop that engine in that you change to the upgraded headgaskets . . . or find yourself pulling the engine again . . .

Not exactly. There are some factory "hybrid" units.

I'll let you guys debate the phase question. Headgaskets have been done recently as preventive maintenece by the original owner once he found the upgraded ones were available. Timing belt and pumps are on the list as well.

Let me ask this though: Why don't you use the proverbial defibrillator and resurrect the engine for reinstallation back in your Legacy? ;) In all honesty, I'd rather have a rebuilt EJ22 in my Legacy than a new EJ25 :?

Eh, that's what Cobb tuning speculated. But there was never any confirmation on that. No true identifying factors either . . . They could never give any concrete evidence of this to my knowledge.

Damn man, I know that sucks. The whole time my hg's were crapping I was feeling very down and depressed about the whole thing so I'm sure this must suck balls. Good luck with the swap, and maybe you should keep your old beast around and pop it in a go-kart or something :D
