KYB fitment info

Post by Legacy777 »

I posted this over on nabisco....but I figured I'd get more response here.

Why the hell does it cost roughly 100 bucks more for struts for the 90-91 MY legacies then it does for the 92-94 MY's? Are there any differences in the struts, valving, damping, etc? Or could it be that KYB has stopped making them, or reduced amounts being made, and therefore cost has gone up.

Also....is there any difference in struts for the turbo models vs. the n/a models? I haven't seen any, but want to verify things.

Here's the part # breakdown

90-91 FWD
RF - 235063
LF - 235064
RR - 235071
LR - 235072

90-91 AWD
RF - 235063
LF - 235064
RR - 235067
LR - 235068

92-94 FWD
RF - 235065
LF - 235066
RR - 235073
LR - 235074

92-94 AWD
RF - 235065
LF - 235066
RR - 235069

Josh, I took Thawa's advice and ordered a set of GR2's for a 92 and installed them on my 91 AWD NA Wagon. They seemed to fit fine, improved the rear aspect somewhat (my old struts had the rear sagging somewhat). They seem to handle fine but there is NO and I mean NO bounce to the front struts. They are stiff, stiff stiff. It handles well but I am still getting the banging/knocking from the front suspension at low speed over small pavement breaks that I had hoped new struts would eliminate. I have since picked up Whiteline front links in the hope they will help but I haven't got around to installing them yet. Maybe this weekend? As for the difference between the 91 and the 92's ... Anybody out there know what the diffence is?

I have no real answer, but the best I can guess is they think it has something to do with tapered rear springs. AFAIK the spring rate didnt change between the years, but what is interesting is I've seen non-us sites suspension parts for legacy's listed in two separate groups. 89-90 and 91-93, so maybe there is a method to this madness.

Thanks Lorry for the verification that the struts work just fine.

I've got a phone number for KYB....I'm going to try and call and see if I can talk to a body.

Eureka! I don't know how front links can make that much of a difference. I put in the Whitelines on Saturday and wow! No clunking at all, the suspension sounds waaay better (actually now it doesn't sound hardly at all !!). At last that thunkin and clunkin over little breaks in the pavement are a thing of the past. Now if I could just figure out a way to get the RF disk brake to stop squealing. Thanks to whoever it was posted and advised me to change those links........ Lorry

I just fitted KYB AGX's to the liberty with low king springs (pics to come) what I suggest so that the car sits flat is use rear springs/shocks from a 94 wrx, looks and drives awesome.
MY02 B4 Liberty, 2 1/2" off the primary with splitter, 3" off the secondary, 3" the rest of the way, completely stainless, k&n filter, ECUtek 3, 500HP walbro, 173kw@all4

I have a feeling it's going to be kinda hard for most of us to follow that suggestion :)

the only thing i noticed, is that up to 91 they only offer the GR2, where as once you get in to the 92-94 they also offer the AGX, so i would have to think, whatever reason they dont list the AGX for the 91, is the same reason they have the GR2 different, and more money.. it seems silly for the same shock on MY apart to be that different though.

i am hoping to put some AGX's in my car, as my 330,000km stock shocks are getting "tired" with about 100,000kms of that being gravel roads. and since i plan to keep on using this car for TSD i want to upgrade the shocks a bit.

as for the clunking on the little lines and the front links, that is very interesting! i suffer from clunking right now too.

I don't mean to sound rude here......but did you read the very first post I made. It says exactly what the difference is between the struts for the 90-91 MY's & the 92-94 MY's. There's no guessing, no speculation, it's straight from the horse's mouth. They probably didn't make a 90-91 specific AGX due to demand. As it's been proven, you can take the 92-94 AGX's and put them on the 90-91 legacies. The only difference will be the changes I mentioned above.

Josh you're thinking of the "KYB Fitment Info" thread, not this thread which is "KYB fitment info"

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=17352

still don't quite understand why you made two topics :)
