hey guys! new to the forum, but not so new to cars... this is my first subaru, and love everything about it so far!
but it has one, pretty major issue, 2nd gear is completely gone, if feels like its going into gear, but alas it is not..
i pretty much need to know what parts/part numbers ill be needing to replace it, or if i should just replace the whole trans?
any help is appreciated!

Re: 91 Legacy turbo trans
It takes pretty specific knowledge to swap/repair internals on these transmissions. My opinion would be that it's going to be easier to swap one in.
For the most part you'll need to get the new transmission with the rear differential to match final drive ratios. Not too many turbo trannies are 3.9FD like yours. There are lots of JDM trannies floating around ebay and the motor import places around the country, or you could source a USDM 02-05 WRX tranny, Forester XT tranny, 04-07 6-speed STI ($$$$), etc.
The 05+ turbo legacy models get their speed readings from ABS, so it'd be a lot of work to use that one in an SS. Splitting the case, etc. Note I've just read about the process, haven't done this.
Good luck and keep us updated.

Re: 91 Legacy turbo trans
so lets say i go to a pick n pull type yard, what vehicles could i possibly source trans/differential from?
and what transmissions would i NOT need the rear differential for?

Re: 91 Legacy turbo trans
If you go to the junkyard, you can pull a tranny from an Impreza, Legacy, Forester, or Outback.
If they're hydraulic clutch, then you'll need to grab their slave cylinder and flywheel, clutch fork, and buy a clutch kit specific to the tranny.
If you grab a cable-tranny, then you'll need to grab the pedal set, cable, clutch fork, flywheel, and buy a clutch kit specific to that tranny.
Most non-turbo cars with hydraulic trannys are 4.11 FD, so you'll need the rear diff. I think the 2000 Legacy L is the only exception for Subarus, being N/A and having both a 3.9 rearend and a hydraulic tranny. Could be wrong though.
Here's a brief list of manual awd transmissions and final drives:
Impreza 93-2001 with EJ22 and cable tranny: 3.9FD
Impreza 98-2001 with EJ25 and hydraulic tranny: 4.11FD
Forester 98-2001 with EJ25 and hydraulic tranny: 4.11FD
Legacy 90-1994 with EJ22 (non turbo) and cable tranny: 4.11FD
Legacy 95-99 with EJ22 and cable tranny: 3.9FD
Legacy GT 97-99 with EJ25 and hydraulic tranny: 4.11FD
Outback 97-99 with EJ25 and hydraulic tranny: 4.11FD
Those are the most common ones you'll find in the junk yard.
For turbo trannies:
91-94 Legacy SS: 3.9FD
02-05 WRX: 3.54FD
06-07 WRX: 3.7FD
04-05 STI: 3.9FD
06-07 STI: 3.54FD
04-?? Forester XT: 4.44FD
05+ Legacy GT and Outback XT get their speed readings from the ABS and would need a bit of retrofit work to go into your car.
