Cryptic Legacy SS '91

Post by advansti »

Well I finally got around to uploading some pics of the car. Currently I'm stripping the car for Tarmac use and cage. Here's the link.

http://s595.photobucket.com/albums/tt33/advansti/

Sure that most of you will enjoy this BC. It's been a work in progress since the day I bought it from the original owner back in 2002. Originally bought it as a DD for my BD Legacy EJ22T/G-DOHC build. As that car moved on the BC stayed in the driveway. What more could you ask for in a strait bodied 125K Turbo BC 5spd.

What started as what I called "A garage sale build", turned crazy. If you break it, more will come... and better. Here's the build list

Propulsion:
EJ257 short block
'98 RS DOHC heads; modified with oil & water passages for turbo
EJ20K STi intake manifold; re-powder coated wrinkle red
Yellow top 480cc injectors...need to upgrade to 740 or 800cc
Walbro 255LPH fuel pump
Forced Performance-TDo5H-18g Turbo
Jecs R60 MAF; Doug Vincent modified
06 Legacy PS pump w/custom res. tank
Version 3/4 Diamond coil pack w/7mm NGK wires
NGK Iridium plugs
FMIC-bar and plate from UK GC8
Perrin BOV- recirc.
Perrin MBC

Electronics:
Perfect Power 6
-may rewire to WRX harness
AVO fuel cut defender
Autometer Gauges; oil pressure & water temp.
Blitz Boost gauge and turbo timer

Drive Train:
05 STi 6 speed transmission w/DCCD
currently running 35/65 split. Spiider Dual controller coming soon
05 WRX rear LSD and axles; swapped R&P to 3.9
All Group N bushings

Handling:
H&R GC coil overs
TEIN camber plates; swapped sides to allow camber & caster change
Spec C front control arms; add 15mm to WB and 1.5* caster
Cusco rear lateral and trailing arms
Perrin 24mm adjustable FSB
Perrin 22mm adjustable RSB; HD mount and links
Poly or pillow balls through out

Rollers:
OZ Superleggera 17*7 48offset; Street
225/45/17 Azenis; need replaced; Street
Subaru 4 pot calipers
Hawk HPS pads
Racing Brake WRX 2-piece rotors; slotted only
OE rear SS calipers
Metal Master pads
Brembo rear rotors; slotted only

Race set;
98 RS Golds w/Toyo RA-1 225/50/16
98 RS Golds w/Kumho v710 225/45/16

Interior:
Sparco Torino seats
-will be replaced after cage install
Sparco 4 point harness
MOMO Race wheel
and rest is pretty much gone...
Legacy L non-sunroof roof soon to be set in.

In the end what project is even done?

I will say thank you to Barrett @ ALL WHEELS DRIVEN, Craig @ Asian Auto, Rob & Bert from both shops and of course my family for putting up with me and getting this project where it is.

I have this strange, strange feeling in my chest, I think most people would call it 'jealousy' hahaha.

Seriously though, nice work man. The car looks great and judging from the mod list, it sounds like it runs great.

DCCD controller

Post by kleinkid »

When you order your DCCD controller, you may need to let him know how your TPS reads voltage. A chip that originally came in mine did not read voltage the way my stock ej22t TPS worked. He then sent me the chip that was the correct match.

Great pics Matt!

That car has been a constant evolution since day 1. It's come a very long way in the last few years. Very glad to be a part of that build, as it's one of the craziest BC Leggies on the road..:)

Thanks for the "Thanks" in your post.

I had to have him burn me a new chip when I got around to installing mine too. 1st gens have a reversed signal compared to all the newer subarus.

Thank you everybody, it definitely has been an entertaining road. Kind of sad though, I said that I wouldn't pull a rare '91 SS 5mt apart...now it's being gutted. Funny I came to that conclusion that one day when my driver side key lock broke.

I've been talking with Jeff from Spiider about the TPS polarity of the SS. The only debate other than $$ has been which unit to go with. In the end I think that I'm going with the Dual unit. Been discussing the parameters and speed of the auto program so I see this one best fit in a racing scenario, autoX, HPDE, and soon hill climb.

The car has JDM side shirts that I picked up by pure luck awhile back for those that were curious. That front lip is something that I came with as a rough draft made from an aluminum sheet and fabbed 1/8" stock. The next generation is going to be easily removable and include a front diffuser. This one sits too low for loading onto the trailer and having to remove the whole bumper. Eventually it will have a flat floor pan and rear diffuser like the one CalculatedRisk came up with.

Subaru the Chevy of Japan. One way or another you can get any part to bolt/swap/modify it to fit. Which in turn is where the name Cryptic came from; one that sits in the background contemplating the next move.

Are you running a larger track width in the rear? I noticed the rear wheel well flare out. Is that just an aggressive fender roll? I am looking to do the same on my wagon.

Really nice car. Would love to see a better picture of the front lip you made. I also see we have the same idea about the sunroof. Mine doesn't work and is cracked and leaks every now and then. I figured on just getting rid of it and saving the weight. I found a good headliner, but haven't cut a top off yet. I guess you don't need to worry about a headliner though.

You wouldn't happen to have the Cusco part numbers for those rear trailing arms and lateral links. I have to get some of those.

Finally back to answer some questions.

The rear lateral/trailing arms are 02 WRX Cusco parts. Don't have the part numbers though. If you're keeping the rear SS hubs you'll have to add a spacer (large washer) to fill the gap on the trailing link attachment point. WRX rears are ~4mm wider.

As far as the rear track width I left it within SS specs. I was reading somewhere that with the slightly narrower track that the car would track better. Better/shallower arc to follow the front on tight courses. Maybe something that I'll have to look into farther down the road. To be honest I need to stop messing with the car and just drive it. So yes it is a highly aggressive fender roll to clear the 225's with the 48 offset with room to spare.

Latest additions are a modified catch can/air-oil separator and I have to get around to installing my new Innovate LC-1 air/fuel wide-band. I think someone asked if I do the work...yes most that I can. All Wheels Driven takes care of the 2 man job pieces at the shop.

Tuning...anyone have a good cheap laptop for sale. The Mrs. knows whats up if I buy another one.

Ding, Ding you got it!

Well for the old setup anyway. When i switched to the divorced pump I wasn't able to use it. Later pumps use a 5/8" return line vs. the 3/8" of old. Now I just feed the coolant for the turbo through it.
