Gillman Subaru Big Event 3

Post by Legacy777 »

One of the local dealerships had a show this past weekend. This was their third one. It was pretty decent and wasn't quite as crowded as the last one, which was nice.

Here’s info on the event.

Here are the pictures and a short video I took.

I didn’t win any of the categories, but it wasn’t too surprising. You’ve got to be really flashy and have bling. I got a lot of props including some from the techs & sales guys at the dealership. They also had Subaru of America there and one of their engineers. They really liked it. One of the sales managers took a copy of a write-up I did to see if Subaru would put it in their Subaru “Drive” magazine. So we’ll see.

An interesting side note, when talking with the engineer from Subaru I found out why they stopped carrying the side window deflectors. He said that a daughter of a big name university coach threatened them with a lawsuit over wind noise. Subaru replaced the deflectors and did everything they could to fix it, but the girl was crazy. In the long run, Subaru decided just to stop selling them. He also mentioned that they lost roughly $10,000 a year on the wind deflectors due to warranty claims about wind noise and other stuff.

They've started providing the wind deflectors again since the new Subarus are framed doors vs. the frameless doors. However, he said they are only put on when requested by the customer since they've had issues in the past.

This guy really had a lot of good info and history on things. It was good chatting with him.

For what it's worth, I would have gladly walked past every WRX and STi there to look at your car. Did you get an enthusiastic reception from the rest of the crowd at least?

That's definitely interesting about the side window deflectors. I actually have factory ones on my B4, although the driver's side is broken in two and glued back together. There is some wind noise, but it's hardly what I'd call intolerable... then again, my Dunlop tires are so noisy that I don't even notice it

What did you think about the new Impreza? I actually like the way it looks.

Yeah I did seem to get good reception from some. Like I said, the folks that knew about Subaru and some of the history were pretty into it. It's why I haven't really been overly big in going to shows. I learned this after going to a car audio show back in 96 or 97. You really need flash to win and something everybody knows. The exception is when there is a specific category for your car :)

Yeah from a couple cars I've driven with Dunlops....they're freaking noisy.

I don't know about the new Impreza.....It may be one of those cars that grows on me, and I might like the new WRX/STi line better. However, the thing I just don't care for about Subaru is that they are going more and more mainstream with their designs. There's just not much that is unique about the cars any more.

No, there weren't any other first gen legacies there.

However there were 2 2nd gen legacies, no 3rd gen, and severl 4th gen.

There were two SVX's there too.
