Started modding it and fixing up various things.

Hacked airbox + K&N drop in
Kartboy shifter bushing kit
New pads and rotors all around

Need to do (just need time):
Swap WRX suspension
Roll fenders
Group N upper strut mounts/engine mounts
Fix knock sensor (helicoil)
New plugs
Replace starter solenoid contacts

Near future plans:
Harnesses (Schroth 4pt)
TMIC

Gotta love the old school emblems:

Second RallyX event for the SS was a success!

Took home 2nd place in MA at the National Challenge/MiDiv Championship, just behind the Evo that won Nationals last year. Put down some times that were only a second or two off that car's pace at most (sometimes within 0.5), so that felt pretty good. Will be getting some SOA money out the deal this time, too, woohoo contingency!

The car held up wonderfully the whole weekend, so a big thanks to my sponsors Russ' Garage for the prep of the car and going the extra mile to make things work when the unexpected arises!

This last weekend, the SS got new group N upper strut mounts, new group N engine mounts, replacement transmission mount, and WRX suspension all around. Definitely a more workable setup, predictable and sturdy enough to soak up the bumps. I also installed another 4-pt. harness just like I have in the Impreza, certainly made a difference as well.

#5 MA 2012 SCCA Rallycross National Challenge Greenwood, NE

Modding status update:

Done:
Hacked airbox + K&N drop in
Kartboy shifter bushing kit
New pads and rotors all around
Swap WRX suspension
Roll fenders (wasn't needed, lifted 1" with WRX suspension and no rubbing)
Group N upper strut mounts/engine mounts
Replaced transmission mount
New plugs + wires
New fuel filter
Harnesses (Schroth 4pt)

Need to do:
Fix oil leak/seepage at pump
Fix knock sensor (Helicoil)
Replace starter solenoid contacts

Near future plans:
TMIC
MBC
2-step
Turbo porting

Nice one man! I have the group-n bushings all over the place and it makes a huge difference, for not that much money.

The first event, I only had the minor intake mods, so effectively stock, yes. Not too big of a difference this time around, if you look at overall performance, but having a not-blown suspension was a noticeable improvement, haha.

At this point, I'm still working through doing maintenance and reliability type work. More performance mods will follow very soon after, though. Will be fixing the oil leak in the next week or two. Then, as soon as I've gathered the final parts I need (I'm about 90% of the way there), I'll be intercooling it so we can turn up the boost a bit.

Both events in this car have been at a local spot in Greenwood, NE. http://goo.gl/maps/Afer Haha, you can still see tracks from before that wall was put in place. But basically, it's an open field next to a local dirt circle track.

I will be taking this car to the National Championship in Tulsa, OK in the fall. Competed in previous years in both a friends '98 2.5 RS (ported heads, mostly gutted interior) and before that my own stock '99 Impreza L. We both did the Nationals in the RS last year. As motorsports go in general, SCCA RallyCross is super easy to get in to and very affordable (http://www.scca.com). The overhead pales in comparison with stage rally, though I'd really like to give that a try once I'm in a position to.

And rebuilding the SS!

The rear main seal was going in addition to there being a few other oil leaks. Staying stock for now, but heads may get worked a bit. Engine got a full re-seal, things checked out and are back together. Block and heads both needed decked (block pictured below).

Trans is apart for rebuild as well, synchros were all but nonexistent in 2nd and 3rd. Replacing shift hubs as well on 1-4, thing's going to be like a new car. Very psyched, it's getting pretty close to done!!

Took off the usual wheels to get them balanced. Winter set from the Impreza looks pretty nice on here, may leave them for a bit! (Prodrive P7s)

So I've had a couple of events now since the rebuild and things are getting to a stable point. We still had to chase down a few issues all of which can be attributed to this being a 20+ year old car. Sensors and hoses needing replaced, also re-engineering a chronically leaky press fitting (AN fitting now, holding nicely).

Most all of these recent efforts are reliability related and have definitely proven effective.

The last event, two days ago, was a pretty tight technical course. Lots of offsets and slalom action meant not enough straights to warrant shifting to 2nd (not unusual given the gearing in this car). That translates to lots of time at or near redline. Due to timing issues, a rollover by another competitor and moving to a different heat to even out classes I ended up doing most of my runs in pretty rapid succession. All of the cooling and oil lines that we've worked on held up great.

Big thanks are again due to RG for spending all day helping get the car ready for the event!

Nicely enough, another competitor wanted to test out their new GoPro and asked if they could use my car.

Super clean car! Good luck with the build. Nice to see no rust on the rear quarters.

Thanks man!

It's pretty clean all over, some of the undercoating is coming off from what must have been a previous owners' off-roading so I may try to reapply that in places. Otherwise I've really lucked out on that front.

Haha, it's definitely advantageous! One local driver has let us use his alfalfa field a few times when our main site was unavailable.

Just got some STi housings and dampers installed and wheel bearing number 3 of 4 replaced. We ended up sticking with the WRX springs that were on it as well as the Group N. tophats; very excited to see how it all functions at next months event. Feels very good so far.

I also finished another project that has been a long time coming:

I've thought about chopping off my muffler (3" straight-through) and just tossing one of those boom pipes on. Next to a WRX with one, my car really isn't any quieter. I actually think the WRX was still quieter with 1 cat and no muffler vs. my no cats and 1 muffler.
