Ever run open down pipe? While my exhaust was getting modded to fix some fitment issues, I was driving open DP and got an after fire that sounded like a rifle shot that I could feel through my seat. Totally didn't scare the bejeezus out of me

Hahaha, nice. Never open DP but when I was parting out my GC, I started the engine one time with headers off just to see what that was like. It was still inside my shop at the time, so to have called it loud would have been a gross understatement.

Shed some weight from the worst place to have it, and now I can fit comfortably with my helmet on! (previously I would have to open the interior sunroof panel and was still coming up short...or tall as it were)

Just finished doing that to my own legacy. Crank was good with a polish, and i reused the rods and pistons. Not too bad if you can do it yourself.

Will reuse crank and rods but adding these to the mix to go with the new heads!

If you're spending the money on pistons, why not get some sti rods? Unless you already have em. Those are not a weak link till well over 450whp. All that for around $100 for 4 (used)

How much power would stock SS rods be good for? I'm seeing where people failed with them but not any alleged safe level...

I don't have first hand experience with failure, but I've read the nut and bolt is their failure point. The rods themselves look forged, but the sti ones are way more beefy and they reengineered the failure point to where it's basically unheard of.

I reused my stock SS rods because my power goals for the car stop with the robtune & a td05 @ 18psi.

Right on, I'll likely be fine then to begin with at least. On the advice of my machinist I have ARP rod and head bolts for this current setup.

*Edit: seems all Phase 1 rods are the same, so early WRX power levels either stock or lightly modded would conceivably apply and be safe here too?

Will be starting out relatively mild with this build but leaving lots of headroom for later. Will be maxed out at about 17psi on a VF24. Down the road we can switch up head gaskets and go to ethanol but will stay on a gas tune for starters. Eventually want to stuff in an EFR series Borg Warner. Sounds like then would be a good time to look at upgrading rods, too; thanks for the feedback!

Missed your question. People run robtunes on stock blocks all the time, so I'd say properly torqued stock rods should be fine.

We should be good if the weak spot was the fasteners.

I was driving my SS back from the airport today with mostly clear roads, having a little fun on the on and off ramps. I was thinking to myself, for all the downtime, the heartbreak, money and wrench time I have into the car, I sure love driving the damn thing! Mine's been running a week since the last issue. Congrats on getting yours on the road again!

Hehe, yeah, it's been a long road with this recent undertaking. We're at about 9 months of down time at this point and still ironing out the tune, but I'm so excited to be on to a new chapter with it, too.

I'll be relearning the car for the rest of this season and probably most of next but it's really nice to be raising the bar on myself again!

Yeah, for whatever reason these cars still have that fun to drive that a lot of newer cars don't have. I do enjoy driving my Legacy since I don't drive it every day.

Yeah, there's something more "organic" about the feel with this era of car. The weight isn't crazy high yet so you get much more direct feedback from the chassis. It may be more noodly, but I definitely prefer it.
