How-to =JDM Projector Foglight Install = w/pics

Post by stipro »

Ok, so I have read through a few topics regarding the install of projector foglights in the "facelift" bumpers, to find they were all question regarding how-to install, with no "how-to". So last weekend I took it upon myself to install my fogs, with factory brackets, and I took some pics to help you guys out. So this is how I did it.

First, pull the front bumper off. With the bumper cover still attached to the beam, mark the beam through the fog light holes were you will need to cut.

Pull the bumper cover off and cut out the metal. You may have to put the cover on and off a few times to make sure you have taken enough material out. When you are done cutting put the cover back on and retain it with a few of the mounting clips, this will give you an absolute when you are positioning the lights in the holes.
ImageImage
Then I took some 1 1/4" x 1/8" steel welding stock and cut two 4" pieces.I will refer to these as bumper brackets.
I removed the hardware and expanding plug from the factory fog light bracket, and held it against the bumper bracket, and positioned it in the foglight hole. Once I was happy with the alignment I marked the mounting holes, and a hole for the expanding plug to fit through, onto the bumper bracket with a marker, and drilled them out. 1/4" for the mounting holes, and 1/2" for the expanding plug.

I put all the hardware back on the lights, with the adjustment screw all the way out, and bolted the lights to the bumper bracket. I figures this way I could weld the in at a slightly lower angle and still have ample vertical adjustment. I fitted the bumper bracket to the bumper beam, and tacked it in place. With the bumper cover still on. Then I tacked the nuts on the back side of the bumper bracket.

After removing the lights and bumper cover, I finished welding the brackets in place with some small gussets on either side of the bracket for extra strength.

Once the welding was done I cleaned up the bumper beam, and painted everything to an oem finish. Once again mounting the cover onto the bumper beam, for the last time, and bolting the lights in for fitment check. Everything looked good.

I Bolted the bumper back onto the car, wired them up to a factory fog light switch, bolted the lights in place and called it a week.

I think it turned out alright, and I hope this helps with the install for somebody else.

The lights look great in the bumper like that.

The weld on the inner side of the bracket looks pretty small. Have you driven over any large bumps to check it?

I welded in some gussets to completely box in the mount to the bumper beam. It should hold :D

i guess i could have just pm'd you but for the record is it Ageian Green metallic...

OR

Agein Blue Metallic?

and with the fogs, i just got them from black bart yesterday :-D
i was wondering if they just plug right into something?
i definitly do not have a fog light button and was wondering if i could get a wiring explanation because this is going to be harder then i originally thought,....

thanks,

The wiring is easy, but there is nothing factory to plug into.

You will have to start fresh.

Just get a standard 4 prong auto relay ( there are actually wiring kits just for this.)

Find a switched on wire in the dash area. And run that line through a switch to the relay. Then wire the rest up.

Not too hard.

You can use that link as a guide, but instead of tapping into the lights, I find a switched power line ( like the cigarette lighter)

For the record is Aegean Blue Metallic :)

No the fogs do not just plug into anything on our cars. I had to build a wiring harness, form fogs to switch in the dash. BTW our cars never had the switch either. As far as wiring goes, I pulled a 12v source feed out of the relay box, under the hood, to a seperate pin 30, on a bosch style relay.

Power comes off of the switched side of the relay, pin 87, to the lights. For the switch in the cabin, I used the 12v feed, and illumination from the defrost switch. The 12v from the switch goes to pin 85 on the relay, and pin 86 gets wired to ground. Confusing?? Let me see if I can get pics.

There has to be a diagram here somewhere. Maybe vrg has one posted. Or you could try danielsternlighting.com as I'm sure there is one on his site.
Its not too complicated. A relay or two, a switch, some wire, a few connectors and some loom is all you really need.
