MT Neutral switch question

Post by Legacy777 »

I'm finishing up all the mechanical stuff on my swap, and soon coming to the electrical part. From all the info I can see in the FSM, the neutral switch on the MT's is not linked to the ignition system. The only spot I can see it going to is the ECU. There is a pin on the ECU for it. That's it.

Is that the only computer/input there is for this switch?

I'm not exactly sure what to wire it to, mainly because I'm not sure which bundles of wires go where and tie into what. I've got both harnesses MT & AT, so I'll just make a plug & play harness for the neutral switch & reverse lights, but I may have to wait until I get the tranny in, and can get the car off jack stands and do some testing/probing.

Yes, the only thing on the car that uses the neutral switch is the ECU. So you'd just need to connect the neutral switch wire to the ECU's "neutral switch" pin.

also from what I've read and been told, the reverse switch is the one closer to the rear of the tranny, and the neutral switch is closer to the middle (which makes sense if you think about it.

to bring an old thread back to life..what does the neutral switch actually DO?

I put in shifter bushings today and I noticed one of the wires is disconnected from the neutral switch. after trying desperately to get a soldering iron in there I gave up, and the car seems to drive fine. This is on MT, too.

I believe it alters the timing ever so slightly to keep the idle where it needs to be.

When I had the at/mt identifier pin hooked up as AT, it made a big difference in engine idle.

Yeah, and it also has some impact on the IAC control stuff... I know my idle speed changes when I'm rolling with the clutch out depending on whether or not I'm in gear.

Are you getting a trouble code for the missing neutral switch? Cuz you should be if it's actually nonfunctional.

No, it's not. That switch is on the clutch pedal.

I'm not getting a CEL for it..one of the wires is still connected, but I'm wondering why I'm not getting a CEL for it.

I guess if it ain't broken, don't fix it. I'll see how it drives today.

Hmm, maybe it's just the ground wire that's missing... t's quite possible that the switch also grounds through its body or that the cut portion of the wire is touching the chassis or something.

The cut portion is just kinda hanging out in air. I was wondering that too..pretty odd. I should get a CEL if it doesn't work.

It probably just grounds through its body too then.

I don't recall the color or pin location, but everything you need can be found here. You're just going to have to read, and look at the wiring diagrams.
