Its probably a joke I call myself 'mechanically inclined' when I can't even get out the two screws that hold the ashtray rails in.

I'm trying to install my aftermarket stereo and I can't get the trim pieces off with the screws holding them on. I mean, I could break it off but I got my car in near mint condition and I'd like to keep it that way.

I saw in another post to use a 'stubby screwdriver'. I have one but thats not short enough. I only got like 2 inches of room to work with.

Extra note: It's a 94 Legacy L.

Get a screwdriver bit for a 1/4 ratchet or one of those ratcheting box wrenches that hold a screwdriver bit. You could even use a regular wrench with a bit, but that would be kind of a PITA. I think the later cars had a smaller storage compartment than the earlier cars where the stubby would work.

Yeah you just use a super short stubby philips. I have one that fits great with a wooden handle. Had another one with a plastic handle but I lost it.

I just use one of those double-sided Philips bits for a multitool screwdriver, since its only 1" long.

they used to be called "skew drivers" made by Scoch back in the day.

Or use an angled "S" shaped screw driver.

I tried gripping my phillips bit with a pair of pliers and that didn't work at all. It doesn't help that the Shifter is in the way and in order to have it down in 1st or something I need to turn the car on. I don't want to stay like that idling, gas is too much, so when I turn the car back off in any gear besides park it won't give the key back and gos ding ding ding ding ding ding until I lose my mind. >.< i've been lovin my Subie up to this point. Why didnt they just use clips??

I'll try gripping it with a wrench next, then I'll go get one of those tools you mentioned if that doesn't work.

atleast its difficult to steal the radio on the bright side for people not familiar with our cars. Its really not that bad imo.

+1 to AWD_addict i bought one of those angles "S"screw drivers for like 2$ and its come in handy several times... too bad I loose my tools so damn fast haha

Its pretty easy actually. Just did it the other day. Pull the tray out. Take out the screws on the upper side. Should be 4. Then take out the one in the very back. Done. I didnt need a stubby. Just a regular six inch phillips.
