That works too.magicmike wrote:This comes up alot. I really think the best method is to just unplug the 2 pin connector at the column. Yes I still would like the key chime, and yes the locks are not supposed to stay locked unless you hold up the door handle. Mine are however worn and it doesn't really work.kimokalihi wrote:Wait, didn't you say you wanted the noise so you don't lock your keys in your car? Doesn't your car have the locks that won't lock unless you have the keys to lock them from the outside?
I know my driver side door won't stay locked unless you lock it with the key. To keep you from locking them in the car. You can lock it and hold the door handle open when you shut it and I think that'll work but you wouldn't normally do that without thinking about where your keys are.
Regardless, I'm just nit picky about certain things and want the chime

I did some testing and looking at the wiring diagrams for the US chime/seat belt computer. I don't think I can get it to work without putting in a relay to open/close the connections between the front & rear limit switches when the door opens.
I was just going to wire everything so the computer thinks the doors are closed all the time. However then I wouldn't get the key chime.
So I will more than likely need the canadian timer.

Well I got everything finished and wrapped up yesterday. Took a vacation day to finish it up.
Seats are in and interior back together. I decided for the time being to just pull out the wire going to the seat belt light on the dash. It was easy to remove from the connector at the seat belt computer. I can always stick the pin back in if needed.
Ultimately, I'd like the Canadian seat belt timer controller, but this will work for now. Here's pictures. I haven't driven the car yet. Still waiting on the exhaust manifold & up pipe to come back from the coaters.

I can now actually see my work bench. I had more shit scattered across it while I was working on this project....

Thought I'll give a quick update since I've now had some time to drive the car with the belts and seats. It's really quite amazing how much of a difference it is.
My butt and body don't get thrown around during turns. The WRX seats are much more supportive than the old legacy seats.
I have left the seat belt light wire unplugged from the US computer and have just been using that. It works fine

Are you talking about the key in the ignition chime? If so, I never lost it. What I ended up doing is keeping the automatic seat belt computer in place and just removed the pin from the electrical connector that illuminated the seat belt light in the dash. I do have a manual seat belt computer, but never ended up installing it because the wire fix pretty much accomplished the same thing with A LOT less work.

Josh, how did you get the plastic trim at the bottom of the B pillers to stay in? This piece.

I had to cut up the lap belt bracket that attaches it to the chassis. If I remember correctly, the outer bracket bolts to the lap belt assembly. I removed that, and then had to cut the bracket so that it could bolt to the chassis, but not interfere with the lower mount point for the manual belts. This allowed me to have some sort of mounting point for that lower plastic trim.
Here's a picture of the lower mounting point for the manual belts.

You can see in this pic that one of the bolt holes that's used to connect that bracket to the chassis is used for the manual belts.

These wiring diagrams should be the same.

If you following the one wire from the light on the dash to the computer, it will be connector R43, pin a5. It's a black wire with blue stripe.
If you need more info, let me know.

Re: Manual Seat Belt Conversion (Finished)
Thanks Josh. I used Canadian trim pieces with 2nd gen legacy belts, and that stupid trim piece has been bugging me. The 2nd gen sliding portion on the upper b-pillar looked like it would have worked, but CFK was nice enough to include post facelift sliders so I didn't find out.
The US center console and its belts also bugs me... I'll prob make a trip to Vancouver BC to hit up a junk yard some day for that and maybe the carpeting if they're different to ours.

Re: Manual Seat Belt Conversion (Finished)
Not sure why the bbs just notified that you quoted me, 8 years after the fact! But I did end up getting a canadian center console, in black, from a friend who was parting out a rusty SS up there. Absolutely crucial is that you get the metal bracket that goes underneath, the one that routes the ebrake lines. Without it, you won't be able to bolt the center console to anything. Best benefit of the swap is that you now have tons of storage, at least twice as much.Legacy777 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 30, 2012 10:50 pmSo about the US center console bugs you? I am updated some of my url's to https vs. http so I think that's why it notified you.
But good to know about the ebrake bracket.....and that you have so much more room for activities in your center console
