the first shop did the engine pull and install and sent out with a high idle. they wanted to charge more to solve the high idle and also told me the trans in bad. then we took it to my parents mechanic to figure out the the shifting issue. the appointment was nov. 19th. still hasnt worked on it

That's BS. He probably doesn't want to work on it.....and is just sitting on it until you take it.

would it be cheaper to redo the auto trans or convert it to a 5 speed?

I vote for convert to 5 speed. If you can source all the parts used (except for clutch of course), you can get it all for under a grand.

Now you see what Legacy777 meant about this being a money pit (in one of your early posts). ;)

well been over a month since i dropped off my subie at the trans shop and guess what he still hasnt even looked at it. i'm putting some serious thought of going to pick it up and just part it out. this is bull crap. the sad part is he was highly recommended for his good workman ship price and good turn around time. i wont recommend him to no one

Have you asked him why he hasn't looked at it? You need to confront him and just ask him...."Do you not want to look at it? If not, let me know and I'll bring it somewhere else." This will give him an "out" if he doesn't want to look at it. If he back peddles and says, no, no I want to look at it, then tell him he's got a week or whatever you want to give him, ask him if he can work with that, and tell him that if he hasn't looked at it after that date, you'll be picking it up.

I ended up in a similar position with a good shop etc... I towed the car and fixed it myself as I have the resources but limited time. I'd have it home where it gets fixed or parted out

I remember back in 2005 a friend of mine took his 200sx to a shop because it wouldn't start. It sat there for weeks. Finally i went down there with my friend to check it out. My friend had a badass alarm installed in the car, EVERY OPTION you could think of and it also had shaved door handles. Well anyways, my friend was telling me symptoms while i was looking at it, It would chirp and what not when you pushed the keypad but only sometimes. Dash lights would come on when you turned the key but it wouldnt start. Took me all of about 5 minutes to figure out the main ground for the alarm had come loose. Fixed the car and he drove it home. Shop owner was extremely embarrassed, he offered me a job and i said i would think about it. Next day when I went in to see if he had work, he said he didn't. I was mad.

See if your parents will pay for the trans swap parts. Tell them it'll be cheaper in the long run, which it likely will.

I might be able to meet some where in the middle. I have to get rid of this car and don't use this style trans. And don't want to junk it.

You should just source a trans and install it yourself.
