Horrible sounds from my frankenmotor!! :(

Post by bdmartin »

so the other day i dropped the engine in my car and it was running great! very torquey and fun to drive :) well today one of my buddies took it for a spin and when he got back said it wasnt running right... i went out and tried to start it and it just shook and made a metallic sound. left it cool down for an hour or so and turned the crank by hand. it turns, but if you rock the crank back and forth it makes a "clunk-clunk" sound. i'm thinking it threw a rod? any input? i really am not in the mood to pull and engine and rebuild right now!

Unless it's a main bearing, could the rod bearings be replaced without splitting the block?

No, it has to be split.

Have you asked your buddy what he was doing when the noise started and how he was driving?

Oh and the block I used I never found out the mileage on it and I'm pretty sure it was high. I'm not putting money into this block cause I can get another fairly cheap, but I'm thinking I might start out with new bearings next time

New bearings are cheap insurance.
