What is EJ22E?

Post by SubaLegacy »

I did some searching before I asked so I don't repeat a question already covered, but everything seems to be EJ22G or T. Is this Japanese market or something? Did Japan even use the 2.2 on their Legacy's/Liberty's? I know the RS is 2.0, but what about the NA? I saw an EJ22E for sale at CNS Motors and they site said it was for 89-94 Legacy's. Was this a typo? If anyone knows anything about this it would be cool to know.

I believe the ej22e was the sohc NA 2.2 engine used in all legacy's, liberty's, and impreza's. Someone correct me though if I'm wrong. I do know however that I've seen the engine code on a bd or something and it said ej22e... but yeah.

The EJ22T is kind of a "nickname," just to designate the fact that it has a turbo. The real engine code is EJ22G, the G denoting that it is a closed-deck block.

So does the Subaru engine code guide...

I don't think they actually called any engine aside from the 22B's an "EJ22G," regardless of how much sense it may seem to make to us.

I know that the block says EJ22T, but isn't it kinda like an inside thing?

So what is the EJ20G that came in early WRX's denoted as? Just an EJ20T?

From what I understand, the early WRX engine code is EJ20G, and the North American Legacy Turbo engine code is EJ22T.

Ya, this has been hashed over a few different times. We all started calling it the EJ22G but after a couple guys (I think Matt Monson and maybe ciper) looked into it it was discovered that it is in fact called the EJ22T, not the EJ22G.

Jesus,
Not this again. The G is part of the applied engine code. The complete engine code is actually 10 alpha numeric letters/numbers designating everything about the engine and even a few things about the trim level of the car.
The 5 place that the G, T, or E holds is the division of fuel delivery. A G designates a DOHC MPFI Turbo engine. The E stands for SOHC MPFI engine and the T stands for SOHC MPFI turbo engine. As the owners of turbo legacies have stated, the metal plate on the driver's side strut tower explicitly says EJ22T on it.

And as for the old 22B debate, I actually found an owner of a 22B in the UK who had taken apart his engine and rebuilt it. The 22B is cast without oil squirters and is a phase II block with the thrust bearing moved from center to the end like all the other phase II blocks. Our 2.2l turbo block is the daddy of the 22b's block, not the same block...

In the 5th position? Like EJ251 or EJ254? and EJ257, EJ207 and EJ205?
In '98 Subaru switched from the letter designations ( E, G, K, T, etc.) to numbers for division of fuel delivery1= DOHC MPFI
4= SOHC MPFI
5= DOHC MPFI turbo charged
7= DOHC MPFI high performance(aka STi) turbo

And in case it isn't obvious:
EJ= flat four
20 or 25= division of displacent in l.

If you want I can look up and post positions 6-10 as well. They generally designate things like trim level, tranny, A/C, etc...

Matt - K? Would that be DOHC MPFI (N/A)?

Where would the Legacy2.5GT fall? The Forester 2.5XT codes as EJ255, would the Legacy be an EJ255 or EJ257?

I would really like it if you could post the other positions. That would be pretty interesting!

The EJ22T isn't just on the strut tower placard, but also on the actual block. My 95 had EJ22 on the block, though. Not EJ22E. Weird.

All the blocks I've seen say EJ22, even my turbo.

Really? Now I'm wondering if my memory is fuzzy. I could have sworn that my block said EJ22T...

Your memory is fuzzy. Here's a pic from my old EJ22T junkyard block:

And I will see about getting the other info for the engine coding. I don't have it with me today, but will post it up in the next few days...
