Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Little bit of axle grease on it when you put it all back together, then it's a not a hassle.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
I typically disconnect the front LCA bolt and anti-sway bar. Doing it this way and turning the wheel the proper way allows enough room to get the axle out and has less chance of the alignment getting altered.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Coupla ways to do it then. As I mentioned mine took 20 mins, but if I hadn't been paying attention I could have screwed up my alignment.
My water pump bearing is making a a bit of noise now, although its not leaking. When warmed up and idling, my temps slowly climb to about 2/3rds or so before being arrested by the fans... no lost coolant anywhere though. I paid 10$ and got 18k miles out of the used wp so I can't complain.

I have another water pump - this one has the oil cooler nipple, so I guess it's high time to install that as Subaru intended lol. All turbo EJ's had the oil cooler except for USDM 92-94's.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Forgot to update this - I swapped to a newer waterpump and an ej22t oil cooler as the ej207 one didn't clear my exhaust manifold.
Fast forward to this week - I'm pulling in to park, and I hear a metallic Ping as I push in the clutch, and pedal drops to the floor. No clutch at all...
My throw out bearing popped out of the pressure plate!

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
I was able to pop it back in in walmart parking lot, but when I was pumping the pedal up, TOB popped out again...
I waited till traffic died and limped home, shifting as little as possible.
Pulled the engine last night, and nothing looks really wrong with the TOB or pressure plate. Ie. no obvious bent fingers or damage...

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Stock 5mt vs 6mt clutch. The 6mt pressure plate takes 9 bolts vs 6 on the 5mt. All the bolts are the same, however. You reuse the 5mt clutch fork, and the TOB and pilot bearings are interchangeable as well. Since I have a phase II tranny now (swapped in an 04 FXT), I had to use a phase II manual starter. I'm not sure if this is because of the new tranny, or the new 6mt flywheel.
You grind down several ribs on the 5mt transmission, nothing too crazy. I'll upload a pic of that later.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Another rear axle was broken... Luckily I was able to make 1 good one out of 2 broken ones.
Broke the metal part the speedo cable goes into, on the tranny... A new one will be here wednesday.
Had a turbo stud that was halfway broken from when I removed the td05 last time... I put my stud remover on it, and I managed to break it off flush with the flange! I'll drill it out and put a bolt through there I guess. It's the stud closest to the head.
This car is just killing me with little things going wrong with it. A simple clutch job is taking 2 weeks. Course it grew into a 6mt clutch, and a tranny (Forester XT) and diff job as well. My full time work and school schedule isn't helping either.

Here's what it looks like:
(My tranny doesn't look as pretty). Make sure to cut the bottom out (where the guy circled) as well.

Those black and white pictures of your car make it look like some picture of the Yalta conference or something.
Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
That's interesting Mike about using the 6spd clutch setup on the 5spd......do you have it in the car?

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Yeah It is running in the car now. The pressure plate was aftermarket unfortunately, so pedal is stuff, or stiffer than the previous oem exedy. But it engages so smoothly.Legacy777 wrote:That's interesting Mike about using the 6spd clutch setup on the 5spd......do you have it in the car?
4.44 gears are the bomb! Im not sure how far off my speedo is now but it accelerates noticeably harder. You do shift more frequently though. Oh well.
My rpm's are lower in 5th gear, but that might be because the speedo is possibly way off with the fxt tranny? Not sure.
One change to make to above: I actually used a WRX starter as my older phase I one didn't fit.

They're not going away - I'm just tired of them being the focal point for the car, considering how ugly they are.SILINC3R wrote:I would keep the RS rims for sure
I'll keep both sets and have a winter/summer tire setup. Probably have the RS's powerdercoated. Not sure what color to do them in though.
Thanks CJ, car runs so much better now. That terrible hesitation is mostly gone, no hard cuts anymore.
