I just drove 1,100 miles on a business trip with my '07 Legacy 2.5i SE and I averaged 30.9 MPG.

I used to get around 19 MPG with my SS, 15 MPG if I was having fun with it.

Shit that's good gas mileage in the 07 Legacy!

Matt, Did you call me the other day? I've been all drugged out.

I get 19-20 in town, and like 26 on the freeway if I stay out of it the whole time

(not an easy task in an SS running 21 psi)

Yeah, I was suprised. That's more then advertised for highway only and this was mixed driving but I admit, it was a lot of highway miles. At one point I was getting 31.8 MPG when it was strictly highway. :D

Yes I called you to see how you made out and stuff. I got your post-op text late so, I just tried to call instead.

I don't have a speedo yet (next week) but on my trip up north for the fishing opener a couple weeks ago, I got as good of mileage as I did when N/A.

How? Running about 1/2 point lean of stoich in the 15.2-15.3:1 range when cruzing. I know the EPA doesn't like that, but my wallet sure does.

When I still had the 22T in my SS, before the IAC valve issues, I was averaging 27mpg constantly, and I didn't exactly baby it either. That was the second engine, which had been sitting for 5 years before getting installed.

Wow, how did you pull that off?

what the crap, you must drive that thing like its a $2 dollar whoar, that or you never do regular maintenance
our 92' Explorer 4.0L gets 17-18mpg, if you cant get that out of a 2500lb (is that right???) 2.2L than i dont know what to tell you
i get 27mpg on average with the city and highway driving i do everyday, on long trips were its pure highway i can get 33mpg at the most
the least i ever got was 19mpg, i had been running it at WOT half the day out on country roads, i only did that once though

Subaru Legacy L FWD 5MT = 2,740 lbs.
Subaru Legacy L FWD 4AT = 2,840 lbs.
Subaru Legacy LS FWD 4MT = 2,995 lbs.
Subaru Legacy L AWD 5MT = 2,985 lbs.
Subaru Legacy L AWD 4AT = 3,055 lbs.
Subaru Legacy LS AWD 4AT = 3,155 lbs.
Subaru Legacy Turbo AWD 5MT = 3,140 lbs.
Subaru Legacy Turbo AWD 4AT = 3,220 lbs.

I don't know about the wagons. Sorry for that bout of obsessive compulsiveness.

And 16 MPG on an N/A sounds like at least two things must be severely broken.

My dad gets consistantly 23-24. I however get about 20. I cant figure out why he gets so much better mileage. He even drives faster than me, waaayyyyy faster. But I get shitty mileage. Hmmm. Maybe the car doesnt like being driven by a 16yr old who drives pretty gentle and rarely (unless trying to get goin fast because he darn near cut someone off) revs above 3k.

I dunno my dad just says he drives smoother, jerk.

speed isnt as important as the time you take to get up to speed and the time you take to slow down

the harder you accelerate and stop the more gas you burn

Yes, also opening the throttle only a little is less efficient than doing so a moderate to great amount.

Depends... in city I get about 20-22 during the Summer and anywhere for 16-18 in city during the winter. But just Highway driving I get 34-35 in my NA with 240K miles.

Here's my run down:

94 NA AWD - 24 CITY, 27 HWY
93 NA FWD - 32 CITY, 35-36 HWY - and she smokes like a stoner at start-up
91 AWD (4.11 GR) EJ22T (mostly stock) - 23 CITY, 26 HWY

Needless to say the 93 NA is my choice for the long trip vacation car.

I notice a big difference just from going from my winter tires to a nice set of all-seasons.
I see an average gain of about 2-3 mpg when I get off the winter treads. Different tire compound and different air pressures seem to have a pretty drastic effect.

Yes, I've heard that the max pressure on the tire (usually 44psi) minus 10% (so 39.6psi for a tire with 44 max) gives the best gas mileage.

Alright, just went from 23 to 26 MPG by rebuilding sticking brake calipers and removing the belt from the broken AC system.

N/A wagon was always ~25-26. With the low compression engine it was about 23, but that included generally more city driving than before.

Accelerating up to highway speed as fast as possible is best, but accelerating gradually in the city is best. Keep a feel for engine load as well. After driving my brother-in-laws Civic Hybrid with the mpg meter, I got a better idea of how much of a difference it makes. Driving slower gets me over 30mpg in the Mazda (as opposed to 27 driving like an asshole).

I'd like to use Vikash's select monitor (link) to help measure the efficiency of my accelerating and cruising, but I'm not sure what value would be best. I was looking at the Duty Cycle value recently for a difference reason, and that's given in "ms" which I assume is milliseconds that the fuel injectors are open, but I'm still not sure how that unit of measurement works. Could someone explain?

You're best way to measure economy is looking at engine vacuum/boost.

Staying out of boost is obviously good, but also having high vacuum is good too.

Where are we measuring, right before the throttle body?

Posted: Mon Aug 04, 2008 4:28 pm
by 93forestpearl
You measure your vacuum/boost from the intake manifold. AKA, after the throttle body. And not the ported vacuum source that is on the older throttle bodies as it gets covered by the throttle plate.

I was averaging 22.4mpg mixed driving. Seems recently with the new 02 sensor it's down to 20.4mpg. Not sure why it'd go down especially after replacing a beat 155K 02 sensor. Unless the Subaru's ECU doesn't like Walker 02 sensors.

It's got a fresh tune up on it. I did put the Belt back on the AC pulley, but it's just spinning nothing as of now since AC needs new Condenser. (was getting 22 with the belt on anyways).

tires are at 35psi and are all brand new. Everything else is running good... I would have figured it would get better mpg.
