For the trailing arm I think I am just going to mark where the bracket goes and cut the bolts, then cut broken nuts out and just weld the trailing arm bracket directly to the unibody and spot weld the bolt holes...

DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUMMM!!!!

with some hard work from a breaker bar and a few beer breaks it finally came out,,,,and underneath Sex Panther isn't as rusty as I thought :D

Image
got these ready to go in also.. just need to drop the tank and deal with that trailing arm...originally I was going to replace all the trailing arm bolts with new ones, but now I am not so sure I want to try and drop the other side I got lucky so far with not breaking bolts so maybe I shouldn't push my luck...

So I am realizing after burning those bushings out I have ordered the ones for the carrier to sit in the crossmember....funny thing about that is mine were so deteriorated that I didn't even know a bushing went there until I saw a picture of where the things I bought go...so I guess I needed them anyway.

So now I need to buy the correct ever so slightly larger bushings for the diff carrier.....the part numbers are off by literally one I bought PFR69 122, and I burned out the ones that PFR69 123 would fit :unamused:

Undeterred, I decided to clean up the 2 diffs I have and think of where each one goes

Here is what I am workin with
Image

on your left the factory open 3.90
Image
and the right the 3.90 VLSD
Image
the open diff was so caked with mud this saw blade stood up!!

Finally got a chance to get back to it, if only for a few hours. Cut that old trailing arm bracket off as the last bolt was impossible to get out and not harm the bracket. I was able to use a telescoping magnet to get the old capture nuts out through these convenient little access holes that I popped the grommets out of.
Image
magnet on a stick

into the access hole
Image
and out the other end
Image
and repeat 2 more times :D

I know I ditched the idea of nuts and bolts, so I am going to weld these in and use em as studs. Gotta get some flanged hex nuts to make it look legit, they clear the trailing arm completely but I might just cut the ends off the studs so they don't stick out so far.......ran out of daylight before I could get the welder going, so it got to hang out in the shed with the gas tank.
Image
probably can't do shit until tuesday, but I might get this thing on the road that day if evertything goes smoothly.

Got the studs welded in place.
Image
Ground em all down....took forever.....
Image
then the bracket didn't fit so I had to grind it down again and paint it.

Got the gas tank lines figured out (hopefully)
Image
this little guy needs to be removed...
Image
Had to modify this seperator valve, I just popped the bottom part off and removed the spring and the valve itself
Image
here you can see what was inside, i'll make sure it fills before I bolt it all up.

Image
not sure what this sensor is for, but I removed it and pluged it with a bolt.

That sensor may be the fuel tank pressure (not sure why they'd have that). Or it could be the canister purge solenoid.

I thought it was odd also because I don't think my RS has that sensor, this is from an 02 STi though so who knows what sensors they use. I just hope the tank fills without any issues, gotta find a filler hose that will work though the filler neck and the port on the tank are different diameters but only by like 1/8th" one is 1 1/2" the other is like 1 3/8"....this should prove to be a pain in the ass for sure. I'll check napa today.

Had to get some hoses from various parts stores today, I couldn't find the diameter of vapor hose anywhere so I used a heater hose for that...hopefully it will work and not eat it up...

I am however worried a bit about the filler neck hose I bought...it was kind of rigid and it kinked a little bit, hopefully it won't be constantly shutting the pump off when I go to fill it.
Image
Aside from that everything else is all connected, gonna grab some fuel and try to fill it see how that works out.

The heater hose will not work and will break down over time.

I don't like the fitment of the filler hose either. That really shouldn't be that way. It may work, but if you can get/find something that isn't kinked like that....I think it would be better. Can you shove the hose on any more or twist it so it's not kinked like that?

It was really tough to get that hose on that far but I might be able to force it on a bit more. Are you sure that the vapor hose will deteriorate? fuel shouldn't be going directly through it ever...I thought the vapors would be fine going through there without swelling it all up.

I'll try to twist it a bit more to see if it fit a bit better, I was thinking maybe I could mold it a bit if I got a heat gun on it and maybe help shrink a portion of it or something....we shall see...it't either that or I could order a whole new filler neck with the hoses attached.

Its 2 layers of hose with strands of fabric in the middle right? If so a heat gun will run the risk of seperating the 2 layers of rubber fom the fabric. I dont know what kind of fabric the manufacturer used, just some food for thought...

The heater hose may hold up for a while, but it's not rated or meant for hydrocarbons. You could give it a try for a while and just keep an eye on it.

Not sure how I am going to watch it considering where it is lol, hopefully it will hold up. Filled it with a few gallons and that went fine, was getting in there faster than I could pour it so it should be fine at the pump. After initially hooking up the delivery line wrong I got sprayed with gas but fixed that and it started up no issues. Now just gotta get everything back together again.

Look at all that STi goodness :smt025 too bad my STi struts need to be regreased otherwise the entire suspension would match....for now I'll be on teins, until I finish the struts anyway. I am sure my wife is not going to like these coilovers so i'll put the teins on the next subaru I buy, probably a GC. Until then she can deal lol.

So got Sex Panther back on the road today and it is looking nice, coilovers are not set very low so I don't scrape coming out of my steep driveway.
Image
I took it down the road and tried to fill it with some 93 octane....and the pump keeps shutting off :( I managed to get $9.59 in there but I was pissed and gave up...it is probably that crimped filler hose, it took gas fine from the gas can so i'll be forced to do it that way until I drop the crossmember.......again...i'll get a new filler neck before I do that though.

That and either my steering rack or pump is trashed, luckily I have some spare pumps I am thinking the leak at the rack is causing a major pressure leak, also I think my backing plates are bent they are making a rotational scrape like the inside of the rotor drum is rubbing the lip on the backing plate. Anyone know how much those backing plates cost?

So until I can buy a new rack OR if someone can verify if a 2001 2.5RS rack will fit, would be nice to get a rack with a bit more steering angle, I already have some moog tie rods. Almost done but added a few more BS things to the list.

So I decided to rip apart a 3.90 Viscous LSD to get my mind off of things.
Image
Image
Gonna clean the case up and make it all nice like and paint it. Shine up the aluminum cover and hopefully I can find a new "3.90 VISCOUS LSD" sticker somewhere.

I have an 02 WRX rack in my SS. The stock column-to-rack joiner worked for me. 01 RS should be a bolt in as well. Just to be safe, grab the mounting hardware from the donor car. Lastly the stock SS power steering lines fit, but developed a leak over time (not the WRX rack's fault) so I've been rockin lines from an ej25d car and that fits nicer and looks cleaner with my dohc heads.

Also, what's the deal with your fuel filler neck. I swapped the one on my ex's 98 outback without dropping the tank. Is there something radically different about the 1st gen necks?

it's because I am using a 2002 STi gas tank, I am happy to report the sending unit works with the SS fuel gauge. I have access to a 1998 RS also, and some EJ25D heads....got some options to play with. I also might be trading my spare EJ22T for a VF39, STi injectors maybe an STi intercooler, STi heads/intake manifold. Or maybe just 3 VF39s...like I said options. :)
