Exhaust Recommendations Please....

Post by Soarer »

I've got a 91 SS and I'm considering upgrading the exhaust. I'd like some recommendations from you long time subi experts as to what I should be looking for.

I don't like loud rattle traps and I hate those coffee can mufflers. I'd like a stock look and bit more tone and grumble from the system. Also, I'm considering doing a small turbo upgrade in the future so I'd like something that will bolt right on to the stock set up and accept a mild subaru turbo upgrade later.

Last but not least, should I be doing headers? I'd like to save the expense and not do them but am open to suggestions. As you can guess, I'm on a tight budget so $650 systems aren't an option. What I'm hoping to hear is that I can take a WRX system that is bit bigger than the stock SS pipes and then put a test pipe and aftermarket muffler on there to top it off.

3 inchdown pipe ( from a WRX) full 3 inch exhaust with a resonator and a dual tip exhaust muffler. Sounds good ( I could have picked up a larger muffler to make it quieter) and opens it up for performance.

Is that a catless downpipe from a WRX? What year? Also, did your exhaust show bend the exhaust for you or did you get it off another car?

bosal downpipe from a WRX. No cat in the pipe. A high flow cat just after the downpipe. A resonator after that. The shop ordered the muffler I wanted. ( Magnaflow) and fabbed everything after the downpipe to the muffler with 3 inch pipe.

Damn! That's a lot of cheddar for an exhaust.

Is it worth buying a used STI exhaust and making it work? If I can get it for $200 then it might be, right?

stock exhausts are just a waste of money. save your pennies and get a greddy sp2 and mod it to length. their ~500 for a catback new and every so often they come up used. not often though because alot of poepl like the coffecan invidia's

i might have an invida cast downpipe with o2 sensor bung (2 bungs actualy) in the correct spot for sale in a few months and i already have a bolton (for the most part) turbo upgrade for sale too

If you want to go cheap but good, then yes, get a used STI exhaust and have a shop modify it. Check NASIOC classifieds.

I wanted something custom, so I was willing to pay the grand.

Here's a pic of my WRX Blitz Nur Spec next to my OEM exhaust, its not an SS-and its a wagon but there is alot of little things that have to be tweeked to make it fit close, with good ground clearance.
knuckling down and buying a direct replacment like the SP2 saves alot of heart ache and reliability issues.

Well I found a Ghetto style of making a stock turbo exhaust sound nice.

Remove the two screws from the mid pipe and axle back and remove the gasket. Cut a small portion of the bottom of the gasket out like this:

Image

I found this out when swapping in my EJ22T - I really wanted to drive it but didn't have a good gasket (the bottom part was missing). If its just sound your looking for that will do it (I'm doubtful there's any horse power gain at all). It passes a little exhaust at low RPM and at high RPM more exhaust passes throught the muffler. In other words at low RPM you have nice rumble sound (sounds nice going through town - but not rattle your brains out loud) but when you stomp on the gas it sounds just a little louder than stock.

Plus your total cost is probably only the cost of the two bolts and nuts you have to replace doing it...and maybe some gasket material if yours is completley rotted away.

If you have problems with inspection (emmisions) you only have to replace a couple dollar gasket that way.

Like I said it's ghetto...but it does work. Your muffler might take on a little more moisture and dirt but I didn't have a problem for the 6 months I ran like that. Since you want to replace it anyway this might curb your cravings while you save your pennies.

Anyone know the correct part # for the Greddy sp2 or what year, make & model car is closest to ours? Will it fit a wagon without too much difficulty? There are currently Sti/ WRX ones on ebay. Also one for a '05 Legacy GT wagon. Anyone know how good a fit either of these is for a '94 wagon?

yea using the exhaust for a WRX works after a few mods but they never fit just right.

i plan on getting a twin tube down pipe and fabbing the rest out of stainless 3", v clamps, high flow cat and mind u a quiet muffler for the sleeper, tack it up with a mig and finish with the tig.
(91 turbo sleeper to be)- RIP

I miss my legacy :(

I just installed an sti muffler on my 97 lgt wagon. it took some modding by the shop, but they did a great job to make it a bolt-on unit so i can remove later when i sell the car and reinstall the stock exhaust. the sound takes a little getting used to since i've been drving in relative silence for years since i had my Impreza RS. I can take pix if anyone is interested.

You know how to make your turbo work better? Clip half of the fins in the inlet off so it will spin faster and create more of a vortex in the intake...
Kickin' it old-school.

LOL awesome. I had something similar on a Ford Escort where the bottom of the muffler rusted through.

Wasn't there a thread a while back about simply removing the gasket to get a louder boxer rumble? I seem to remember THAWA's name, but I'm not sure...
