Things would have to have gotten much, much more sour than that before the thought of cutting my rim would ever even have crossed my mind...

fwiw he should have tried a 50/50 mix of auto trans fluid and acetone
shake and spray. Let this soak for a minute or 2 then find the correct hex drain plug socket and hammer it in then crack it loose.
I have owned 3 VW's and never had this happen also I'm working on owning my 4th subaru
