Just bought ej22t swap for my 00 rs. Need opinions on heads?

Post by Turtle »

So as it say, I just bought a complete ej22t set up, out of a 93 wagon, for MY 2000 rs. My question is has anybody really gone through with the ej22t SB/ej 251 soch heads set up. I know I saw a link on this hybrid set up, but can't seem to find it. Plus all the info on this set up seems to be just all hear say. Has anybody actually done it?

it's been done, a friend of mine had that setup in his rs, i personally don't think it's worth it. why stock with sohc?

Just intrigued by the article in read way a couple years ago, talking about the 251 phase 2 heads flew more air on the flow bench than even Ls1 heads. Mate that up with the strongest block and that would be a killer set up. Plus it the heads that on my 00 RS. Why don't you think it was worth it? And what's all the problems ur friend had?

You don't want to run non-turbo heads on a turbo motor. There's too much valve overlap, which will cause a lot of air and fuel to blow out the exhaust valve.

well, in all honesty i personally don't think building up SOHC is worth the work. There's members on here tho that have gotten alot of power out of the sohc heads, but they're limited. I think josh has pretty much maxed out his SOHC setup (It's not RS SOHC Heads)

If you want to do some more engine work, go DOHC on your 22t block.

As far as problems, i don't think he had any. everything will mate up.

Just a point of clarity - the SOHC from the 2.2 flow signficantly less than those of the 2.5. The 2.5 SOHC do flow very well and debatebly better than many of the DOHC heads.

However, as Josh pointed out, the overlap can kill you when you start going for bigger power.

There are plenty of reasons SOHC can be prefered over DOHC. One of which is you have half the rotating mass which does add up. Spark plugs are easier to get to on a SOHC, sounds trivial but I greatly dislike having to remove items in my engine bay just to change $8 plugs because acess on the DOHC sucks.

One thing you need to determine Mr. Turtle is how much power you really want. The overlap from the NA cams can be 'okay' if you're just shooting for the 200-250 chp mark. Once you start going above that you will start seeing the negative effects of too much valve overlap.

Another thing to keep in mind - the NA heads will require some custom work to configure them to accept the coolant and oil needs of the turbo plumbing.

I know it's a cop-out, but, once you set your power/budget goals you should spend some time searching the forum for head preferences. There's a lot of information out there on making the SOHC work and the DOHC work. Both have different caveats and requirements. But by all means, feel free to ask questions.

I've got a Delta 220 grind going in, so we'll see how that helps the heads. It should help it breathe better at the top end, which is what these heads need.

I'm shooting for close to 300chp. How much chp can the 2.2t put out?

the 22t in my opinion can probably put out more than a usdm wrx 2.0 purely for the fact that it's closed deck.

you should look into the stroker motor builds. search for that and i think you will find some useful information. add that to a DOHC setup and i think you're in for a good time.

That's a loaded question......and will depend on a lot of different variables. In stock form/internals, it is capable of 300 chp with a different turbo and supporting enginement/sensors.

ya was kinda a loaded question. Everything seems to be at the 300 chp range, for the for the rotating assembly, heads and my RS drive terrain...

I will be using ethier a tdo4, vf34 or legacy GT turbo witch I think is a vf40. I all ready have sti injectors, and walbro fuel pump sitting on a shelf...

I didn't know that the SOHC RS head would have valve overlap, very good information to know. If you are planning on using a standalone EMS anyway, you could probably convert to DOHC with minimal wiring changes.

All good info. I've been texting with a the guy that will be doing wiring and he told me it would most likely need a stone alone. I'm gunna ask him his opion on me putting on some dohc heads in this first stage of building, or wait till i bulid up the rotating assembly and tranny. Either way my stock RS drive terrain can't take more than 300- 325hp.

Ya there was also another one the I think was called www.ej2.2thybrid. net, or some thing along those lines.

I already have the 251 shoc phase 2 engine in MY 2000 RS, and a extras set of heads from my last engine...

So I talked to my wiring gu-ru, and we got the build up in order now.... I eventually want to turn up the boost on my car(ie. all forged interinals, 2.35 stroker, ect.) but for that to happen, I need a drivetrain that can handle more than 300-325whp. So till a 6 speed swap, or dog box, there is no need to put some dohc heads on the 2.2t short block. Also knowing I'll be wanting to go to dohc later down the road, there is no point to hack up my wire harness for the 2.2t head, when we will have to re due it again a couple years later. Plus my car already has sohc. After talking to 3 different people, the 2.5 sohc is well capable of reaching 350whp if rebuilt with turbo cam's, 3 angle job, ect.
