Re: Epic Build Threads
My Vanagon Syncro diesel engine swap (along with a huge amount of other work) I don't know if it's epic, but it certainly has been a saga; 5 years on the table to date... Hope I get to drive it before I'm too old to climb up into it. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=466866&highli...

Re: Sans Subie
The dreaded "Oil Sludge" problem... The owners (and sometimes the dealerships) failed to use the prescribed synthetic oil, and the turbo would coke up, dropping cooked oil turds into the oil pan. These congregated around the intake screen, and choked off oil flow. If the driver ignored the...

After 10 years, I find myself without a Subaru in the stable. :| I've gone all-VW for now... here's the new ride; 2004 Passat Variant 1.8T 4-Motion 5MT A bit of a unicorn in the VW world, very few of these were imported with a manual transmission. This is one of 6 documented cars in this color combo...

I never liked the F&F series, tho I like Vin Diesel.
The Transporter movies, however, I enjoy thoroughly... great driving, fairly witty writing, & Statham is a believable anti-hero.

Re: Air suspension on 93 Legacy
As far as I know, it's a one-piece unit, if the bag is shot, then the whole strut needs to be replaced. If you can get the air hoses off, try squirting some Slime for tires into the strut, a lot of Audi Allroad owners swear by this fix. The Slime forms plugs in any holes in the rubber air bag... wor...

Just an opinion, but All-season tires simply suck at everything. ;-) I got a set of these Hankooks in 14" Icepike 409, or something like that Hakka knock-off tread pattern  http://www.discounttiredirect.com/product/tires/hanst1.ang.jpg Quiet on dry pavement with decent handling, and absol...

+1 for the garage door seal. If you take your time installing it, it looks the shit, and you don't have to worry about breaking it on curbs. Check out Ebay for pictures of this stuff used as lips... but buy it from HD or Lowes.
Re: STI key
It will work, but do it yourself if you can access a cutter, or go to a real locksmith to have it duplicated, the STI key needs to be shortened a little bit.
The STI key is thicker, too, so it will feel a little balky in the door locks, but it worked fine on my '91.

Re: help with a 93 wagon
I'm having the same issue with mine, cranks slowly like it's fighting itself. Happened out of nowhere, parked it one night it's ran great, next morning, nothing. I thought for sure the belt skipped. I pulled the timing cover, but everything lines up perfectly, tensioner's good, etc. New belt last ye...

I have personally experienced tread separation on a used tire set, but it was lite truck tires, non-directional tread... it's not a myth, if that's what you're asking

Re: Top Gear American version first episode
Good article, thanks for posting that. I think it comes down to the personal interaction... the guys on TGUK have know each other for years, are comfortable giving the others a hard time, and it's entertaining simply to watch them talking to each other. Give the US crew a chance to grow into the rol...

I've been using Serif's MoviePlus X3 for editing, it's a decent, inexpensive editing program for PC. I have a Tachyon helmet cam that takes pretty good video, taken it skiiing & surfing and a few paintball sessions.

Re: I felt my blood rushed to a certain place when...
The stock 3.90 will do about 170mph at 7,500 RPM on 225/45/R17 tires. It's quite unlikely that this video is real. Heh, why, because your car won't do it? :P It sounds like a sequential dog box, for one thing, there's probably a complete rally car drivetrain in it. Watch some in-car videos of WRC c...

Re: The Ur-Outback? My Allroad/XC treatment on the '93 wagon
Yeah, I considered doing that... I have to mock it up first with black paper or plastic to see how it looks, that's an awful lot of area. I do need to finish blacking out the trim on the doors. I have a Gen2 spoiler to put on too, painted that black. Planning on tinting the windows.

The Ur-Outback? My Allroad/XC treatment on the '93 wagon
Here's some shots of my Allroad clone project. Sort of an Outback prototype, before all the cladding and flares when it was just a paint job. This started with stripping the paint off the bumpers for life in the city, guess I got carried away. :P All the black is Rustoleum satin, applied with a Prev...
