Personally, I'd want something to keep the cams from unloading. It doesn't take much to bump things and have the cam sprocket move on you. Murphy's law says that you should probably use the alignment tool... They can be had online for ~$30. The top D-side intake cam is definitely rotated counterclo...

The easiest way to fix it is to Google around and figure out the name of the program, and then find the names of all the files that it makes and are associated with it (and their respective directories). Then boot to a live CD and search your HD for those files and delete them. It's the only thing t...

If you only have one box, you can boot to the Ubuntu live CD (might need to change the boot order in your BIOS) then download the necessary file/app and put them on a flash drive. You should grab all your important files/docs and back them up onto an external drive while you are in there, just in ca...

You really want to use the alignment tool when you disassemble, and I honestly can't imagine not using it on reassembly. With the crank gear lined up to it's timing mark, the pistons are half way to TDC on all 4 cylinders (I believe). At this point the cams on the driver's-side head should be loaded...

1. Don't know the size of those, but easiest way to get it off is put your socket and breaker bar on there, brace the breaker bar against the frame, and blip the starter. Oh yeah, make sure the plugs are disconnected ;). You can also just jam the flywheel through the inspection hole. 2. Yes, unless ...

It depends on the model, you can find them with either. I see them on ebay allot though... In reality, almost any subaru transmission from 1989 up will work (maybe except the GL-style ones), so you have allot of options. Even those with 6 holes will apparently bolt-up to the 4-hole motor without iss...

I just feel that driving 65 mph with less than 5 feet off my bumper is not the safest way to go about your day. You would not fit in well in NJ... Apparently people in this state think that's the norm. And if you leave a nice cushion between you and the car in front of you, some A-hole is sure to j...

Changing your driving style can make your synchro crunch a non-issue. The whine in first... Unless it's hard to talk over, I'd run it until it blows. I've rebuilt several (6?) 5MTs now, I suppose I should do a writeup but I only have limited pictures. Just to crack open the case will cost you $400 (...

There's nothing wrong with machining flywheels (as long as the cracks aren't too deep). If you drive correctly and don't beat on your car, you shouldn't have really deep cracks. I've had mine done 3 times now, in 300k and I've never had a problem. You obviously don't want to go overboard and take to...

Is that the only time it does it? If it does it at other times as well, I'd begin to suspect transmission mounts. Also, here is an exercise that will only take you an hour - switch your left and right front CV's with each other... still make the noise? Has the noise switched to the other side? Somet...

The pinion gear does not drive the ring gear directly at it's center, but is offset from the centerline by ~2cm. I'm wondering what difference this will make because you will not actually be simply spinning the ring gear around the pinion to reverse it... you will be mirroring the geometry as well. ...

I think there's a pretty good chance... I think the only real issue is going to be adjusting the ring and pinion lash... If you can snake a dial indicator through the drain hole to a tooth on the ring gear, you might have a chance. However, now that I think about it, the case might not have flutes/b...

Muffler Express in Toronto - Excellent quality and CHEAP!!
I know some people have been looking for direct fit OEM replacement exhaust parts (particularly for the NA); check these guys out: http://www.mufflerexpress.com I'm not in any way affiliated with them, but they did an outstanding job for a very reasonable price. I had them make me a midpipe and inte...

This guy http://www.mufflerexpress.com/ made me a stainless mid-pipe without a cat (put a resonator in place) for ~$80. John is his name, and he's a hell of a nice guy. He also made me the stainless intermediate pipe, and I'm going to have him make me the tailpipe to which i will weld my muffler of ...

Is it straightforward for everything? I heard it being likened to going to the store to buy a hammer, but having to buy the handle and the head and assembling that first... It used to be like that, but Ubuntu basically changed everything. The latest release is as flashy as OSX with 10,000 times the...

If you want to save a bunch, I got a cluch kit from Phoenix Friction that came with an OEM Exedy pressure plate, a decent throwout bearing (although I used an OEM one) and an organic clutch disc manufactured to OEM spec right here in NJ. I've had it in for 6 months now, I've been really happy with i...
