Re: Strange Wheel Noise

Are your motor and trans mounts in good condition? No free play making stuff slop around when bogged? A failing trans mount will cause a noise like that... but again, from axles slopping around. It usually happens when decelerating down a hill, or accelerating from a turn, but not usually above 40 m...

Re: AC compressor question

I'm completely converting my A/C system as well... I was wondering if anyone knew how much oil should go in the Zexel compressor / AC system? I'm switching from r-12 mineral to R-134a, so I've disassembled and flushed all the individual components (except the compressor just yet), replaced all the o...

Re: Strange Wheel Noise

If the replacement axle was of dubious quality (e.g., autozone, advanced auto, napa, etc.) then it would be my suspect number one, barring any other egregious issues up there... I had a pair of cheapo axles in my car that started making noise after about 300 miles. I replaced them with quality OEM r...

Re: AWD and FWD 5mt difference

Josh (Legacy777) has a good writeup on his site detailing his AWD conversion. Off the top of my head you won't need too many MT specific things, just: - A 5MT trans - you can't swap the rear-half on without changing all the gears and the diff - definitely not worth it. - MT 4.111 rear diff - AWD MT ...

Re: Lifter help

HLA = Hydraulic Lash Adjuster. Those are the lifters on our car. Once you have the rocker arms off, _gently_ tug the HLA's out of their spots with a pair of pliers. Most of them will pop right out. The bleed procedure is in the FSM, but basically submerse them in oil, depress the ball valve and blee...

Re: WTB 98 and older AWD 5 speed

I'll take $200 for it, but shipping is a bit cost prohibitive... I think it's too heavy for GH, so freight may be the only answer. I have pallet service at work, so it would be significantly cheaper, but still no less than $150.

Mileage is ~102k, BTW.

Re: WTB 98 and older AWD 5 speed

I've got one, but I'm on the east coast. It's out of a 98 outback, runs fine. Slight diff whine on deceleration, it just needs a lash adjustment via the side bearings.

Re: Tell me what I'm looking for.....

Have you considered buying the code and expertise off the German dude who originally programmed the machine (rather than hiring him as a consultant)? I had a very similar problem with a 1980's GVI mass spectrometer here at work. GVI became GV, then VG, and was eventually absorbed into Thermo who did...

Re: Updated syncros?

The updated version provides much smoother shifting (for those shift challenged), but trades this for robustness. The old style are quite a bit tougher and will last longer, but aren't as effective at syncing gears... If you tend to beat on your trans, stick with the old style (if they are in good s...

Re: turbo 5sp problem

First thing to check is if the notches/holes in the bearings are lining up with the pins in the bearing carriers on the case. If not, you'll have issues, but I doubt it would bind or that you'd even be able to reassemble. Second (if the first is OK), did you change the carrier bearings on the side o...

Re: which 5mt

You can get most things you'd need. If you want to replace synchros, you might have difficulty finding the originals - they updated the design. If you're ambitious enough to crack into one, I would highly recommend begging/borrowing/stealing the special alignment tools. It can be done without them, ...

Re: my transmission tz102yb3ba-ge Got Issues *Edit*

Is that a USDM tranny? The numbers are suspicious. I think there is a good chance it's a 4.111 FD, it's not on my tranny chart though. Jack up all 4 wheels (have a safety driver in the seat ready to kill it) and count the revolutions of the tires.

WTB Driver's side power window regulator - it's hot out!

I need a driver's side window regulator assembly, ASAP... mine sheared off at the center pivot (I know, impressive... don't ask me how). If you've got one and can ship quickly, drop me a line... It's been quite stormy around here.

Supposedly (89) 90 - 91 is often different across trim levels... But 92-94 NA AT should be uniform at 3.9, MT at 4.11.

Sweet! That's kinda what I had guessed, and I found myself wondering something else: How to weld the gears and keep them from shifting so the viscous unit still lines up with the spider gears. Last thing I need is more jacked up hillbilly teeth in there. I believe you can tack weld it while assembl...

Late to chime in... but goddam I'm impressed. He'd have had to seriously womped on that, but I have seen one case where the pinion was "sharpened like a pencil" from grenaded carrier bearings on either side of the housing... Didn't look like that though. In that case, it was still driving ...

Weird, according to dealer and my parts manual (and several previous threads), 737411752 is the AT/MT replacement part that supersedes the original... I've got it in my MT and it's working just fine right now. I had previously broken 2 of the original ones with the flexible tallywhacker.

Cocktails are usually bad news bears... I've had great luck with subaru's gear lube (although you have to buy a huge thing of it if you can't convince the tech to dispense it for you). The price is comparable.
