Re: Anyone run Linux?

Glad it's working out. The nice thing is that you can add/remove free programs from the repositories at will. They are just sitting there waiting for you to download and use, completely plugged into the GUI of the operating system under the menu. I love that feature. I got a new macbook pro through ...

WTB: Post-facelift hood NY/NJ metro area

I need a first gen post-facelift hood somewhere in the tristate area... Will even go to PA, but none of the junkyards around here have a first gen. Anyone got one? Let me know!

Updated and PM's replied. I've got some more crap I'll be putting up, including a 4.11 rear diff, set of Delta Torque Grind cams, OEM Cam seals... etc.

Re: 1997 outback AWD tranny into 1990 legacy?

I'm the guy who ran it. It worked great for 6 years, but I had started doing allot of field work with significant highway driving - I got tired of the low fifth gear so I swapped the trans out. It was a direct swap, nearly identical to the first gen. In practice, 5th was really not that much lower t...

Re: help with transmission and flywheel mismatch

Speaking from experience, 4.44 blows chunks on the highway. Depending on the trans, topout is something on the order of 100 mph, and cruising without causing unnecessary wear to your motor is <<70 mph.

FS: 5MT + trans parts + Grage cleanout

Cleaning out the garage getting ready to move soon. I’ve got some nice parts, and some not so great parts… everything has to go eventually! SOLD: Transmission: 5MT - TY752VACCA (I believe) out of a 1997 outback. This is the trans with the low 5th gear (0.871) that is apparently great for rally. I wo...

Re: Broken tranny.. so now what?

The trans currently in my car (quick swap in of a new main shaft) makes the exact same noises in neutral. However, i know those bearings are all good, but another trans I pulled apart making those noises has a bad bearing on the 1-2 gear on the layshaft. That's the problem in my current transmission...

FS: Brand New STAINLESS header and Catalytic converter - NA

UPDATE: Selling a brand new stainless header and cat for an NA. I also have a stainless intermediate pipe that bolts to the end of this. These are about $300 new - they bolt right on and should mate up with your existing setup. I have one of these on my car now, and bought this one for another legac...

Re: Anyone run Linux?

The only programs I ever miss are adobe's. I really, really wish Adobe would stop being so stuck up and just simply release a Debian linux build of their pro suite (illustrator, adobe pro, publisher, etc.). They have the code, you can compile basically _any_ code under linux as long as you have the ...

Re: Brake swap.

Regarding your overly front brake bias, upgrade the rears to the H6 sized rotors and calipers. That will help bring the bias back to what it was before you swapped on the WRX stuff. That's what I did with my WRX brake swap. Those H6 11.3" rear rotors work great. I actually went with LGT rear c...

Re: turbo 5sp problem

It's challenging, but not too bad if you take your time and read the manual. I want to be crystal clear we're talking about the same bearing here... The one right behind the pinion gear on the pinion shaft?? That should spin normally... http://roosrule.com/images/transmission.jpg The one directly be...

Re: turbo 5sp problem

IIRC, there is a slight preload on the rear bearing, but you need to measure it with a scale to make sure it's in spec. The bearing on the front of that shaft right behind the pinion gear (the one I think you're talking about) should spin freely as normal. If it doesn't, you're bearing is shot, the ...

Re: turbo 5sp problem

They should be relatively loose when you put the case together. You don't want them pushing the ring gear toward or away from the pinion - but you want them to support the front diff on the bottom half in some semblance of it's correct location while you assemble. If the pinion shaft is tight when y...

Thanks, Josh. I Saw your writeup, but I didn't know if those amounts were specific to the Calsonic AC system. I have the zexel, which I probably failed to note in my post. I'll try flushing it out with PAG.
