hey Vikash. Maybe you could help me with my gauge problem. I hooked up my oil pressure/temp gauges up a few weeks ago. Everything works fine and I tapped into the stock radio lighting circuit (single wire). The dimmer switch "works" but in opposite... when the lights in the dash go dim the...

I don't know if it will fit on a TD-04. Still at that price why not pick it up? I really doubt that will fit. The auction says the housing only fits TD05 cartridges. The stock wrx turbo uses a TD04 cartridge. Although you could buy an big 16g or 18g cartridge to fit in the housing and screw the sma...

Yeah, that problem has been discussed on this board before. A few people had the crank pulley come loose a little bit and chew up the key. But no one's actually taken apart the engine and noticed internal bearing damage because of this. It makes sense, tho. Without the dampener properly fitted to th...

I KNOW THOSE GUYS!!

Anyways, I was at the Barnes and Nobles in White Marsh last night and happened to come across the SubieSport magazine. Flipping thru the pages I see a couple of reader rides I knew: Dave and Phil's cars!!!!!!! It was quite refreshing to see some people in a magazine that I know... much more that the...

Horsepower is torque at rpm so if you can maintain any amount of torque at a high rpm, you get a lot more horsepower. Cams work by moving the torque curve up in the rpm range to create more power. Beat me to it! :D Yup, hp is the ability to make torque at high rpm. Basically, what you're looking at...

Ok, similar question. You have 2 cars, they are same model/trim/trans, but one is awd and one is fwd. How much hp do they need to have before the awd is faster in a 1/4 mile? Depends on what you mean by faster? Are you looking for elapsed time or trap speed? TYPICALLY (given some drag radials on bo...

The gaps are very small and you have a couple rings. There are gapless piston rings, but I wonder how much of a difference they really make. Steve Gapless rings are quite a misnomer. There is no ring that has no gap as there needs to be some slack for the expansion of the metal. I'll do a wet test,...

In a compression test you're supposed to reach a steady state after several turns. The tester has a check valve that only allows the reading to increase. Doing extra turns shouldn't materially change the number. Abnormally high compression probably won't be beneficial. Steve's list of all the advan...

Intake is only an extra pipe run thru the stock air box. Exhaust is stock. My particular car aside, does a higher compression across the board (for the same engine) account for anything in terms of performance? Power? Torque? Throttle response? Also, is the base number dependent on bore and stroke o...

That is true. But would it cause an increase of around 30psi? Very puzzling. Another thing. My car was sitting outside (in the frigid weather) just before I drove it into the bay. Compression test results....

Well, I decided to do a compression test on my car. Now after doing all of the correct steps (disabling ignition/fuel, WOT) I got dry readings of: cyl 1 - 245psi cyl 2 - 243psi cly 3 - 241psi cyl 4 - 245psi I ended up with numbers ALOT higher than what people normally find. The service manual states...

Unfortunately, the tip of the bolt is deep within the rocker shaft assembly, so there's no way I can dremel a slot in it :( Do they even make an easy out that small? These are 5-6mm bolts, yes. As for hardness, I know it has the standard markings of three hashmarks on the head. Not sure what that means in terms of hardness. In all honesty, I wouldn't mind trying to do it the TSB way, however, I can't really spare the downtime right now :( I am a little worried a...

Here's a link to the TSB. I changed the exhaust bolt to the "new style," but left the old one out:

Not sure if the chisel will fit in the bolt hole. I thought about using a bolt extractor, but I don't think they make one that small.

What epoxy would you use?

Okay, so here's my problem. There's a bolt in the camshaft assembly that has separated. So the tip of the bolt (part of it is still threaded into the rocker shaft) is stuck in the rocker shaft. The TSB that's out lists a VERY involved process where you need to take out the camshaft and slide the roc...

I wonder if they checked for the heads being warped before they put in the replacement HGs. I have a feeling the previous owner may have driven the car in the "red zone" for a little too long. This time I would suggest you have the dealer check the heads/block. It's sad to hear that Subaru...

However, once you re-weld the pipe, all of the paint in and around the area welded will be burned off. The pipe might end up rusting on the inside where the paint was burned off.
