The Legacy is generally more plush than the Impreza. Rarely any 90-94 Legacys came without power windows/locks/mirrors and most Impreza's did.

I think that as long as it doesn't start leaking air or water, I think it's good.

Yes, it does sound like an IAC thing. The ECU compensates the increased load of the A/C with a higher idle. This includes the IAC as well. Sounds to me like the IAC is dirty and the ECU is getting bad readings off of it.

That is horrible that something like that had to happen. I say that we find another ABM 94 and make it live again!

I would say wires, but the fact that it dies when put in gear says to me that it's electronic. The ECU by nature starts to compensate with the engine when the car is put in drive. Find someone with a known good one for sale and test it. Don't go buy a new one.

Nothing with more than ~125k miles
Has to be daily driver capable - no project cars

I bet it's valve cover gaskets myself. That's one of the most common leaks I know of.
