A straight WRX trans swap will require a 3.54 rear diff. The WRX has a 1.1:1 transfercase that our cars do not have.

Actually, I think it's a "locost". Basically a homebuilt.

Looks to me like a regular "H" pattern on the shifting, just really well executed.

Pretty sure that 2.5 rods are the longest ones. The piston pin location is raised closer to the crown to compensate.

A 2.5 piston has the pin almost in the oil control ring if I'm not mistaken.

There might not neccisarily be more damage if a good machinist gets ahold of it. I have had frozen bolts milled out in such a way that the original block threads are not touched. My reason for wanting a 2.2 or 2.35 is for the added torque. Not really the added strength. It is going to be a daily driver and my power goals are modest. I don't plan on doing a 4.11 or 4.44 right away so the added displacement will help with everyday drivability, AKA fun. I already have 2 closed ...
