Re: Megasquirt DIYPNP

Never finished this project. The car is still sitting in the garage, with the ECU on the seat. We never were able to overcome the RPM issue. I've got too much money tied up into the project to give up, but it's probably going to sit for a while.

Re: 95 ej18 impreza engine harness wiring qustions

We are doing a swap and we are missing the part of the engine harness that runs between the blue and grey connectors and the ecu in the above picture. Is that harness section ej18 specific? Don't believe so, I will check my FSM tonight. Does anyone know when they switched from the round connectors t...

Transmission is removed from the car and the case must be split. Once the halves are separated, you'll have access to the speedo gear.

Re: Engine Transmission Swap

That's kind of strange, the 6 holes were introduced with phase 2, 4 were from phase 1.

They'll still line up, the only difference you'll have to look at and work with is how the starter bolts in. Pretty sure Phase 1 used 1 studs on the starter and phase 2 was 1 stud one bolt.

Chance one of the brake calipers is sticking significantly? This happened to me before and the car shook terribly.

I'd also avoid the cocktail. Reports have surfaced about damage this mix does to Subaru transmissions.

Re: Engine Transmission Swap

Are you sure the 2.5 in your 1999 Legacy is Phase 1? If it's SOHC it's Phase 2. 1999 was the year of the Phase 2 change over, unless you got some mix of unknown parts. As far as bolting things up, they'll go together the exact same way. Block bolting points are the same. Regarding differences betwee...

The cheap version is to take the heat wrap off of the power steering lines on a junk yard Subaru. Same stuff.

Re: Possibly blown transmission, real quick question

i should know this, but are ss / turbo legacy trannys cable or hydro driven? Hydro. All the the pull style transmissions were hydro. Subaru switched push style transmissions to hydro somewhere around 98/99. Even if you have an early push style that was designed for a cable, you can swap it to hydro...

Re: Possibly blown transmission, real quick question

Check out the Transmission Information Chart here: http://www.northursalia.com/techdocs/techdocs.html You'll get all your compatible transmissions. You have to pay close attention to the final drive ratios (the 3.9 and 4.11 numbers) - you'll see that a 2000 Legacy base model has 3.9 gearing where th...

Re: Possibly blown transmission, real quick question

All misinformation so far. It's not clear to me why you're trying to swap drivetrain - Auto to manual project? A few basic rules. We're dealing with AWD, so there are front diff ratios and rear diff ratios. These MUST match. You can't run a 3.9 trans and a 4.11 rear diff. There's a great transmissio...

I agree, lining those holes up is always a PITA.

I think if you wanted to weld something, you could consider boxing in the transmission mount itself. There's a lot of play to be lost there.

I'd rather change the transfer case than split the whole trans. Have you seen my center diff writeup? It's got all the details.

Re: 91ss. Broken Shift Forks/Clutch Fork

That sounds like a good plan. Personally I'd have made the WRX trans work. The 3.54 gearing comes from the transfer gears, not the center diff. You could swap the transfer case, center diff, and transfer gears from your legacy trans into the WRX trans and it would give you the 3.9 gearing. As far as...

Re: problems with wrx trans fitting into my 91 SS

This thread is confusing.

So you were trying to replace the transmission with a WRX unit, but when you found out the FD from the WRX was 3.54 you decided to try and fix the old trans? And for some reason your exhaust doesn't fit right? I'd like to help but I need a backstory.

Re: swapping to non turbo rear brake set up?

The benefits of a vented rear rotor are pretty negligible for most drivers. If we were talking a change in rotor diameter then it might be a bigger deal. If I was getting cheap parts, I'd probably swap too.

what about the length as well. are all the axles the same length or will i need certain model axles for the diff The rear axles will be the same length. Subaru started using longer axles in the WRX sedan starting in 2002. You'll be fine with the older stuff. Easiest way to source a 4.44 diff will b...

Re: '94 L AWD clutch? (will a '06 WRX clutch fit?)

The 06 bearing slides onto the fork like the turbo throwout bearing does. No clips are used. The new bearing also has a larger diameter than the old one, so the fork was widened to account for that.

Re: '94 L AWD clutch? (will a '06 WRX clutch fit?)

Ah - I see. Technically the 06 fork could be cut and welded with a cable clutch fork end to fit. That would probably be easier than trying to adapt the end of the cable fork to fit the 06 throwout bearing.

Re: '94 L AWD clutch? (will a '06 WRX clutch fit?)

'06 WRX clutch won't work for anybody that did read this. NA Legacies have manual clutches so.... not happening. If you have something build after '95, however, those clutches seem pretty baller. Can you elaborate? I don't see how this would be an issue. In the past, cable vs. hydro was just a matt...

Stuff from personal experience to make life easier- I usually remove the front axles when dropping the trans, gives you more wiggle room.
