Depends... in city I get about 20-22 during the Summer and anywhere for 16-18 in city during the winter. But just Highway driving I get 34-35 in my NA with 240K miles.

Yes... they are just held on by clips. Just be sure to pull them slowly as to not break any clips. The clips pull straight out or up... or however way you want to think of it. LOL.

I'll ask about the head gaskets... was it just the type of gasket that Subaru used to begin with or is this going to happen time and time again? Also, I guessing the Transmission is a 4EAT? What can be done to protect them from the usual problems.... Transmission oil cooler? How much would that help...
