What are you trying to check for? If you want to check that the mixture is being adjusted by the ecu then leave it idling and watch the O2 reading, it should constantly fluctuate between about point seven and point three. If it's doing that then the O2 sensor is working. If you want to check the gen...

Get a long screwdriver to your ear and listen to each injector in turn. They should make a nice crisp click noise if they are shutting nicely and probably no noise or a dull bump at best if they are stuck open. Even if they are shutting though they may still be leaking or atomising badly due to depo...

It should knock off with just a little more force than you can exert with your hand. If you can't get a puller then use a lever behind two opposite sides or a lever behind one side and tap gently as best you can on the other side. Don't try and force one side too hard or it will cock over and jam. A...

Yeah, that's too bad Lava. I think there is a good lesson for us all here though... diagnose what the problem is before you start changing parts and doing a lot of unnessecary work. I can't help but think that if you had downloaded a free copy of subaru select monitor and got yourself a simple adapt...

It will be your thermostat. Their job is to get the motor up to heat and to keep it there. It is a cheap part and fairly easy to change. It's a good idea to change it every two years or so when you are changing the anti-freeze.

For those home handimen out there... Another useful tool I have found is a little serial port adaptor from dataq which allows me to read sensors while the car is running or cranking. This is the actual voltages directly from the sensor, not the ecu's opinion. It's nothing that can't be done these da...

Hi, I have been reading data out of ecus for a few years and have tried doing it as you say but it was beyond my simple mechanics mind. I don't know enough about programming. I have read and read on-line on forums and have played with all sorts of readers, terminals, serial port loggers, hex editors...

Hi B3lha, Thanks for that. I've added it to my data file and I'll be putting it in the select monotor too. I'll be interested to see how that A/F address works in some of the other models. A/F and knock correction seem to be the most often misdiagnosed addresses and they are really quite vital to ch...

I'd agree that mice can eat wires but if that is going to cause a problem, it will probably be that you get a short and a fuse will blow. I'd check the fuses first, pull them out and make sure they are clean on the pins where they go in and that they are not blown. Then I would check the relays, pul...

Hi all, if you are using those files please be aware that some of the addresses may not be correct and the information you get out man not be either. i have used the 7232xx, which I modified because the O2 average was a meaningless number that never changed and was useless, so I have added a live fi...

Hi Josh, the file is on it's way. People need to check the figures they get because some of the ecu addresses are not correct I think but I have not got the cars to check them against and there are zillions of variations it seems. Perhaps we could have a thread where people can post their suspected ...

The canister could be full of fuel or there could be an air leak in it or the vacumn pipe going to it, these problems could cause erretic idle and or faulty O2 readings.

Damn, that doesn't look right, I'll try again with just the subaru stuff. You just paste it in at the bottom with a <ecu> above and below it. If this doesn't work this time someone better tell me how to post the whole file on here someplace.

That interface does work with older subarus and the only problem I had was that I needed to use a usb to serial adaptor as recommended with the download. I've modified the data file so it has more subaru models in it. If you go into the program, find the data file and right click to "edit"...
