I'd just like to ad to b44jd's comments about the turbo guys: I've also noticed that the new generation of WRXers in this country have a similar attitude which I find very discouraging whether online or out in the street. I was a Subaru fan smoking VWs and some BMWs with old GLs (73 rated hp!) befor...

Thanks magicmike! I've been wondering why I go through aftermarket CD players every three or four years. Even took one out to have it repaired twice and it would work fine on the bench for hours, but as soon as you put it back in and moved the car... Anyway, aging shock absorbers makes perfect sense...

Non-constructive criticism just shows true ignorance. There's a reason I come to this site instead of I-Club. Just like the Legacy is a little higher quality than the Impreza, I like to think the owners' club is too. I could go on about my vast knowledge of auto history that I'm sure others may not ...
IHI is a turbo manufacturer like KKK, Garrett, Mitsubishi, etc. I assume they all have proprietary flanges, but I don't know for sure. I've always driven N/A and felt a turbo outside of a race car was just a crutch for an anemic engine (Grand National excepted). I've changed my tune in the last few ...

Micum, I tried contacting about the hood via email with no results, so I figure I would just try and wait it out. I don't know how long tours of duty go, I think it varies by mission or something. If someone else could get a hold of his roommate and arrange for pick up or something I'd be happy to s...

My sister's 2001 outback has them and I've been thinking of a way to do this myself as the wipers are terrible over 80 (good thing for Rain-X). I'm just not sure how I would attach them so they'd stay and look good. I've seen Diablos with little carbon fiber ones, I think those would be really cool,...

Yeah, I'd pay extra to get this hood at this point. I've located some early Impreza turbo hood vents to swap in too as they look more like they belong there (I think they're the same as the Legacy rally cars). Anyway, the most important thing would be that this guy doesn't get shot by some useless b...

I was informed of the cracked head issue with the early Legacys when my head cracked. My car's very early production (Nov '89). It's also N/A (open deck) and I would doubt the turbos had any problem. Of course with the way I drive maybe I should follow my own advice: Don't blame the car, blame the o...

Being all gloom and doom, there's another possibility: bad head gasket or cracked head. The first year N/A Legacies had a problem with cracked heads and the water pump might not be pumping coolant as air can build up in the housing after driving for a while, causing cavitation and eventually displac...

It'll probably take longer than three hours, but I'd try pulling the motor if you can, IMO it's easier and makes things more accessible than working underneath the car. Subaru's output shafts have more splines than some older cars I've worked on (more engineering overkill), requiring a little more f...

My rack was about $300, the rest was labor for my mechanic. If you've got a garage, you could probably do it, but having a lift would make it a hundred times easier. I paid to have it done because I think they built the car around the rack. You have to drop the lower crossmembers and everything (or ...

I also highly recommend getting stock rotors cryo-treated with good pads and tires. I used to warp new front rotors every 4-6 months until I got them cryo treated and now it's been almost three years and they're fine. Don't even seem to rust as badly either. I run EBC Green stuff for pads and Falcon...

I have 220K on my wagon and I still have the original: alternator, power steering pump, fuel system except for filter, wheel bearings, all blinkers and one brake light (check all the nearly new cars on the road that always have them out), and the A/C compressor (uhm, but that just died, so...). Near...

Don't feel stupid, I fix complex SMT machines as part of my job, worked on all kinds of cars, and I can't check the oil in these things either. I have to let the car sit overnight in order to get any kind of reading that makes sense. The rest of the time it just goes all the way up the dipstick and ...

Being used to the '84 GLs I owned with manual steering, I was really disappointed with my Legacy when I bought it (I was looking for another '84, but any left around here are as rotted as mine were). Once I upgraded to 195 width tires and transferred the small diam Grant steering wheel I had on my G...
