Sounds right to me too. My manual didn't do so well on this one.
And yes, the plastic on the outside is cracked. Trying to remove the bolt required a lot of force...must not have been torqued to specification (14 ft-lbs).

Do you really have to remove the intake manifold before you can remove the knock sensor? I have a '93 (non-turbo).
