You are correct. I put forester KYB GR2 struts and shocks on mine ($100 from PNP). That gave me about 2 1/2 inches. I did need to swap the rear tophats. The fronts just bolted up. The only issue I ran into was the caster angle on the rears. The back wheels were riding almost at the front of the whee...

I use a length of hose. Put one end to my ear and move the other end around until I find the noise I'm looking for.

The rims from Legacys, Outbacks, Foresters, as well as Imprezas (newer STI's are different) all have 5 x 100 bolt spacing. You can use the rims.
An Outback tire, however, is bigger than the Legacy (Generally speaking). The tire will touch the lower spring seat on the struts.

Outback wheels, generally speaking, are too big. They will not clear our struts.
