Re: Economical Scanner

Scanner, like for reading engine codes?

None will work for both cars.
On the 98: It's OBDII compatible, so any cheap parts-store code reader will work.

On the 92: See here for the procedure on pulling codes from the ECU:

Re: minimalist brake upgrade

The single piston caliper with it's bracket will not fit over the larger rotors. You'd be best served with 02+ Outback front brakes (same as 02-05 WRX) as long as you have 16" wheels. If not, then 96-99 Outback/GT brakes are the same size as SS brakes but with a better caliper. No matter what y...

Aha, guess that shows me. :P I did the TXV and heater core at the same time with the dash out, didn't look like it'd be possible with the dash in but that's good to know.

The dash and evaporator core do need to come out of the car to change the expansion valve.

Re: Best choice for front wheel bearings

I just did front wheel bearings on my wife's Outback, I have a 20-ton hydraulic press. Wouldn't want to do it with much smaller. Felt like it took a good 10-15 tons to press the old bearing shell out.

Re: Exhaust temp gauge...where to mount sensor?

If I had to choose one or the other, AFR all day, especially on an N/A engine.
Sensor needs to be pre-cat but should be after any exhaust system merges.

Re: Gauge mounting 91 leggy

If you do some searching, there's an early 90's Honda application that works almost perfectly in the firstgen Legacy. There aren't any direct-fit parts.

Re: Gauge mounting 91 leggy

Most people do an a-pillar mount or replace the center A/C vents with a plate for gauges.
I've also seen people put them down by the stereo, but I'm not a huge fan of that positioning.
Another decent option is a gauge cup attached to the steering column trim in front of the speedo or tach.

Re: 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo - Clutch Help

Pumping the clutch fast or multiple times I find aerates the fluid far too much. I start with the clutch up, open the bleeder a small amount, and gently guide the pedal to the floor. Don't let it bang down to the floor on the spring pressure. Once it's nearly at the floor, close the bleeder and slow...

Re: Tuning the stock turbo legacy ECU

The only viable options nowadays aside from a standalone are pretty much a plugnplay 20G ECU like a PowerFC, a stock 20G ECU, a Robtune'd 20G ECU, or an ESL board in a 20G ECU. There are options, for sure. This thread is 11 years old, nobody is going to tune the stock ECU these days. There's much be...

Re: 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo - Clutch Help

Nope, is the picture set to private? Is the reservoir funky shaped black plastic with a radiator cap on top? If so, it's the coolant tank and fill point. It plays a role in cooling the turbo down after the engine is shut off. If it's round with a yellow cap, it's probably brake or clutch fluid reser...

Re: 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo - Clutch Help

I was going to say that one of the stock lines to the clutch delay valve is long enough to reach the slave instead.
Shouldn't be an issue with reusing the banjo bolts unless they are clogged.

Re: Possible cure for 22t hesitation/stumble/lack of power

Stock target boost on a US turbo Legacy is 8.9psi.
The 7.35psi referenced in the FSM is the wastegate actuator spring pressure.

I'd guess your Pressure Exchange Solenoid or MAP Sensor was bad.

Re: Exhaust temp gauge...where to mount sensor?

You want to see EGT at the exhaust port, so most people put it in the cast elbow that bolts to the head. Newer Subarus have an EGT sensor in the uppipe in order to monitor the catalytic converter temperature to prevent it from melting and going through the turbo. You don't care about that really, so...

Sounds like the right track.
It's normal for fluid to not come out when disconnecting the lines. It's not under pressure until you hit the pedal.

Re: 1993 Subaru Legacy Turbo - Clutch Help

Try not to ruin the car in the Gambler, these cars are getting rare, especially factory 5-speed ones. Unless it's already ruined/wrecked/rusty, then have at it. ;) That's normal behavior of the clutch pedal when there's no pressure in the hydraulic clutch system. The assist spring pulls it toward th...

Re: Chip for stock ECU!

Revtronix doesn't exist anymore, that's what we're saying. Your easy options for the Legacy turbo are: RobTune EJ20G ECU, no tuning possible but can be set up for common mods ESL Board for live tuning EJ20G-specific plug-in aftermarket ECUs like the PowerFC Aftermarket standalone ECU like Link, ViPe...

Re: Enduring Solutions ECU board and why you should buy it

Maybe Mike can chime in with his ESL experience, but for me on a 20G ECU with a RobTune, it took two or three starts literally every single time the temperature was below 50* or so. Seems like different people have different degrees of issues.

Re: Chip for stock ECU!

You're bumping a lot of really old threads my friend. Good on you for searching, but keep in mind the relevance of outdated info and thread bumps.

In the case of RevTronix, they came out with a product, worked on it for a bit, then fell off the face of the earth. They've been gone for years.
